{"id":55168,"date":"2018-08-20T17:04:52","date_gmt":"2018-08-20T17:04:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2018\/08\/20\/army-pursuing-possible-alternatives-for-a-stryker-based-active-protection-system\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T00:06:55","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T00:06:55","slug":"army-pursuing-possible-alternatives-for-a-stryker-based-active-protection-system","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/land\/2018\/08\/20\/army-pursuing-possible-alternatives-for-a-stryker-based-active-protection-system\/","title":{"rendered":"US Army pursues alternatives for a Stryker-based active protection system"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WASHINGTON \u2014 While the U.S. Army has been working to qualify a Virginia-based company\u2019s active protection system for the Stryker combat vehicle, it is also in the process of evaluating several additional <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2016\/12\/16\/2017-holds-key-army-decisions-for-vehicle-active-protection-kit\/\" target=_blank>APS solutions<\/a> for the platform beginning in November.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe Army will be executing a fourth non-developmental APS system evaluation,\u201d Army spokeswoman Ashley Givens told Defense News in a recent statement. The evaluation will be on the Stryker platform, she confirmed, adding that the service has received three responses to a request for information released earlier this year asking for more Stryker-focused APS solutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAt this time the Army is still reviewing the proposals of the vendors to confirm viability,\u201d Givens said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More than a year ago, the Army determined it needed to field an interim APS solution for the Abrams tank as well as the Stryker and Bradley. The service decided to rapidly assess off-the-shelf APS systems to fulfill an urgent operational need after failing \u2014 over a 20-year period \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2017\/04\/06\/army-speeds-up-future-modular-active-protection-system-for-combat-vehicles\/\" target=_blank>to field an APS capability<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Army has since selected three different systems: Israeli company Rafael\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/digital-show-dailies\/ausa\/2017\/10\/09\/europe-bound-army-to-urgently-field-abrams-tanks-with-trophy-active-protection-system\/\" target=\"_blank\">Trophy system<\/a>, which is deployed in the Israeli army, for Abrams;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2017\/06\/19\/iron-fist-revealed-the-likely-interim-active-protection-system-for-bradley\/\" target=\"_blank\"> Iron Fist from IMI<\/a>, another Israeli company, for the Bradley; and Herndon, Virginia-based Artis\u2019<a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/digital-show-dailies\/ausa\/2017\/10\/09\/iron-curtain-ready-to-bring-active-protection-to-stryker\/\" target=\"_blank\"> Iron Curtain for Stryker<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While the Army has stayed on track with Abrams, due to a combination of earlier funding availability and qualifying an already fielded system, it has struggled to stay on schedule with the other two configurations.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/land\/2018\/01\/29\/active-protection-systems-for-stryker-bradley-delayed-due-to-software-hardware-issues\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"198\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/StrykerIronCurtain.jpg_7f41f8.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Systems to protect Stryker, Bradley vehicles from missile attacks delayed<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">A variety of issues have caused six to eight month schedule slippages in two out of three of the Army&#039;s efforts to qualify active protection systems on combat vehicles.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In January, Col. Glenn Dean, the program manager for Stryker, who also manages the service\u2019s effort to install APS on combat vehicles, told Defense News that Iron Curtain\u2019s delay was partly due to a decision to replace the radar originally intended for the APS.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019ve had some other issues,&#8221; he said. &#8220;We have learned that that system probably is not as mature as originally envisioned, so the contractor had some difficulty getting to the point they were ready to start characterization, and then we had some, I will call it, friction on the test range.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the time, Iron Curtain had roughly three weeks of testing left to wrap up government characterization. Dean said the program office would be ready to generate final reports and bring it to the Army for a decision in the March time frame.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In April, the Army released a sources-sought notice looking for other APS solutions for Stryker and also received, in fiscal 2018, $25 million to qualify a fourth system as part of the interim APS program being called the Expedited Active Protection Systems activity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to Givens, the program office has completed the installation and characterization phase of the ExAPS activity, but \u201cwe are currently awaiting an Army decision on the next phase of activity for Iron Curtain.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Army\u2019s evaluation process of additional systems is expected to come in the form of a live-fire \u201crodeo\u201d \u2014 for lack of a better term \u2014 where the service has invited a small number of the RFI respondents with the most promising potential solutions to have their APS capability put to an initial limited test against a set of threats defined by the Army, according to a source familiar with the effort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The respondents are required to fund the demonstration primarily at their own cost, but some Army funding will be used to conduct the tests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At least two companies have been invited to participate in the rodeo, the source said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One those companies is likely Germany\u2019s Rheinmetall. The company has advocated hard for the Army to also qualify its<a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/digital-show-dailies\/dsei\/2017\/09\/12\/rheinmetall-wants-in-on-us-army-fleet-protection-effort\/\" target=_blank> Active Defense System<\/a>, and the Army admitted, prior to receiving FY18 dollars, that it would want to qualify ADS if it had the funds.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/land\/2018\/03\/08\/rheinmetall-intensifies-push-to-enter-us-army-combat-vehicle-fleet-protection-program\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/RheinmetallADSmainphoto.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Rheinmetall intensifies push to enter US Army\u2019s vehicle protection program<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The company\u2019s marketing effort this week at its Germany-based proving grounds comes as potential fiscal 2018 funding would cover the qualification of another APS for Army combat vehicles waiting in the wings for congressional approval.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rheinmetall is partnered with Michigan-based <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ubtus.com\/about\" target=_blank>Unified Business Technologies, Inc.<\/a> \u2014 or UBT \u2014 on the ADS design and integration efforts in the states. Former Army acquisition czar Heidi Shyu and Scott Davis, the now-retired program executive officer for the Army\u2019s ground combat support and combat service support office, serve on UBT\u2019s board of directors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cADS would be at the top of the list,\u201d Dean said in January. \u201cIt was really close in the design runoff between it and Iron Fist, and we ultimately selected Iron Fist \u2014 and there were other competitor systems.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Meanwhile, Iron Fist live-fire and automotive characterization on the Bradley is still ongoing. \u201cThe delays have been attributed to weather delays at the range,\u201d Givens said. \u201cThe Iron Fist decision is planned for [the first quarter of FY19].\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And while the service progresses on a decision for an APS for Bradley, it is also attending a demonstration in Israel in two weeks of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/digital-show-dailies\/eurosatory\/2018\/06\/11\/rafael-to-demo-lighter-trophy-protection-system-on-bradley-fighting-vehicle\/\" target=\"_blank\">Rafael\u2019s Trophy VPS<\/a> \u2014 a lighter version of the Trophy system going on the Abrams tank \u2014 on a Bradley Fighting Vehicle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While Rafael chose Bradley for the demonstration because of its availability as a platform, its Trophy VPS can also be integrated onto Stryker and other lighter combat vehicles, the company has said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cArmy leadership will also attend Rafael\u2019s Trophy Lite demonstration in August and pending the results of the demonstration and U.S. government analysis, it may consider pursuing as an alternative APS solution,\u201d Givens said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Selected companies will
