{"id":55251,"date":"2022-06-24T21:42:43","date_gmt":"2022-06-24T21:42:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2022\/06\/24\/raytheon-northrop-advance-in-competition-to-develop-hypersonic-weapons-interceptor\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T00:08:10","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T00:08:10","slug":"raytheon-northrop-advance-in-competition-to-develop-hypersonic-weapons-interceptor","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/pentagon\/2022\/06\/24\/raytheon-northrop-advance-in-competition-to-develop-hypersonic-weapons-interceptor\/","title":{"rendered":"Raytheon, Northrop advance in competition to develop hypersonic weapons interceptor"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WASHINGTON \u2014 Raytheon Technologies and Northrop Grumman have each won contracts to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/pentagon\/2021\/11\/20\/heres-the-three-companies-selected-to-design-hypersonic-missile-interceptors-for-mda\/\" target=\"_blank\">continue developing hypersonic weapons interceptors<\/a> in a Missile Defense Agency-led competition, according to a June 24 Pentagon contract announcement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Each company was awarded a firm-fixed price modification to a previously awarded contract for rapid prototyping. Each modification is worth roughly $41.5 million, bringing the total contract value thus far to around $61 million each, according to the contract announcement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In November 2021, the MDA chose the two companies along with Lockheed Martin to design the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/naval\/2022\/02\/02\/budget-uncertainty-throttles-mdas-development-of-a-hypersonic-missile-interceptor\/\" target=\"_blank\">Glide Phase Interceptor (GPI) <\/a>for regional hypersonic missile defense. Through other transactional agreements, the companies entered an \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2020\/02\/05\/mda-taps-industry-to-build-interceptor-to-defend-against-hypersonic-threats\/\" target=\"_blank\">accelerated concept design\u201d phase.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/digital-show-dailies\/smd\/2021\/08\/13\/missile-defense-agency-dials-up-the-speed-in-quest-for-hypersonic-interceptor\/\" target=\"_blank\">interceptors are intended to counter a hypersonic weapon during its glide phase of flight<\/a>, a challenge as the missiles can travel more than five times the speed of sound and can maneuver, making it hard to predict a missile\u2019s trajectory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The interceptors will be designed to fit into the U.S. Navy\u2019s current Aegis Ballistic Missile Defense destroyers. It will be fired from its standard Vertical Launch System and integrated with the modified Baseline 9 Aegis Weapon System that detects, tracks, controls and engages hypersonic threats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While Lockheed was not awarded a contract to participate in next phase of the GPI competition, it is competing against Raytheon to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/air\/2020\/09\/01\/two-hypersonic-weapons-just-completed-a-new-milestone-in-development\/\" target=\"_blank\">develop scramjet-powered hypersonic missiles<\/a> as part of the Hypersonic Air-breathing Weapon Concept (HAWC) program run by the Air Force and DARPA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And Lockheed is the lead systems integrator for what will be the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/naval\/2021\/11\/18\/navy-looks-to-get-back-on-schedule-for-fielding-hypersonic-missiles-on-submarines\/\" target=\"_blank\">Navy\u2019s Conventional Prompt Strike<\/a> offensive hypersonic missile and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/breaking-news\/2021\/10\/07\/dark-eagle-has-landed-us-army-finishes-equipping-first-unit-with-hypersonic-capability-minus-the-missiles\/\" target=\"_blank\">Army\u2019s Long Range Hypersonic Weapon.<\/a> Northrop Grumman designed the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/training-sim\/2021\/05\/27\/us-navy-conducts-first-live-fire-test-of-hypersonic-missile-motor\/\" target=\"_blank\">motor for both weapons.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lockheed is also developing the Air Force\u2019s hypersonic <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/air\/2021\/04\/06\/the-first-flight-test-of-the-air-forces-air-launched-hypersonic-booster-didnt-go-as-planned\/\" target=\"_blank\">AGM-183A Air-launched Rapid Response Weapon.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">MDA told Defense News in an email that the agency still has the ability to pull Lockheed back into the GPI effort later \u201cif required.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Northrop began <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/industry\/2019\/03\/19\/northrop-launches-hypersonic-defense-push\/\" target=\"_blank\">a push to develop hypersonic missile capability<\/a> in 2019 when the Pentagon made hypersonic capability a priority. That same year, Lockheed Martin <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2019\/09\/17\/scoring-recent-development-contracts-lockheed-bets-on-hypersonic-missile-production\/\" target=\"_blank\">broke ground on a new facility in Alabama<\/a> geared toward developing, testing and producing hypersonic weapons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">None of the companies immediately responded to requests for comment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/digital-show-dailies\/smd\/2020\/08\/04\/mda-pauses-defensive-hypersonic-missile-design-effort-to-refocus-plan\/\" target=\"_blank\">MDA hit the pause button <\/a>on its hypersonic weapons interceptor effort in summer 2020 to bring a defensive hypersonic weapon online. But the agency took steps this year to move forward again and received feedback from industry confirming a glide phase interceptor is something that can be done \u201cand we shouldn\u2019t be afraid to go do it,\u201d Vice Adm. Jon Hill, MDA\u2019s director, told Defense News last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">About a year ago, the agency revamped its approach to hypersonic weapons, opting to focus on taking out hypersonic weapons in the glide phase of flight, where they are most vulnerable, according to Hill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The agency will first focus on providing a capability to the Navy. \u201cIf this is successful,\u201d Hill said, \u201cwe can move it to the land-based battery to protect other things against that sort of hypersonic threat.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The agency has yet to detail the program\u2019s schedule for subsequent phases, but, according to fiscal 2023 Pentagon budget justification documents, the agency plans to reach weapon system and missile systems preliminary design reviews in the fourth quarter of FY27.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Missile
