Tokukazu Omine, the C-2 program manager for the Japan Air Self Defense Force told Defense News in a Nov 12 interview. \u201cThe best way to understand the aircraft is actually seeing it, so we hope for everyone to learn more about the C-2 through this airshow.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/digital-show-dailies\/dubai-air-show\/\" title=\"\" class=\"selected-link\" data-original-title=\"\">Click here for more coverage from the Dubai International Air Chiefs Confernece and Dubai Airshow.<\/a><\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The C-2 is the most high-profile aircraft making its international debut at the show, which typically emphasizes commercial aviation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The plane, which is powered by twin CF6-80CK1F turbofan engines, was designed to be a more powerful alternative to Lockheed Martin\u2019s C-130 Hercules, which is operated by the JASDF, but was not meeting the country\u2019s airlift requirements, Omine said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Japan\u2019s Ministry of Defense has spent about \u00a5260 billion (U.S. $2.3 billion) in development costs on the program, and is under contract for 11 aircraft \u2014 although Omine said Japan currently plans to buy about 20 planes. Since March, Kawasaki has delivered three aircraft to the JASDF, with a fourth plane coming this month.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/digital-show-dailies\/paris-air-show\/2017\/06\/21\/japan-looks-to-us-to-partner-on-used-aircraft-resale\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/tc-90.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Japan looks to US to partner on used aircraft resale<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">As part of Japan\u2019s strategy to expand defense exports, it\u2019s looking to the United States to take part in a cooperation for the resale of used aircraft to Southeast Asia.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Japan is in talks with several potential customers about the C-2, said Omine, who declined to say which countries or regions have shown interest. The Japanese MOD and Kawasaki believe the C-2 could compete in the same market as Lockheed Martin\u2019s C-130 and Airbus A400M, and New Zealand and the United Arab Emirates are rumored to be interested in the aircraft.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The JASDF is paying about \u00a520 billion, or $176 million U.S. dollars, per aircraft. It can travel a distance of 4,500 kilometers while carrying its maximum payload of 36 tons in its cargo bay, and can hit max speeds of about 0.82 Mach, according to the Japanese MOD.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The program wrapped up developmental tests in March, and has begun operational testing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Omine could not provide data about the number of fight hours clocked by the aircraft or give insight about how the aircraft have been used operationally since delivery, but said the JASDF has been satisfied with the
