{"id":56150,"date":"2015-12-06T21:30:19","date_gmt":"2015-12-06T21:30:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2015\/12\/06\/rolls-royce-offers-engine-for-turkish-made-fighter-jet\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T00:09:30","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T00:09:30","slug":"rolls-royce-offers-engine-for-turkish-made-fighter-jet","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/air\/2015\/12\/06\/rolls-royce-offers-engine-for-turkish-made-fighter-jet\/","title":{"rendered":"Rolls-Royce Offers Engine for Turkish-Made Fighter Jet"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>ANKARA, Turkey \u2014 Rolls-Royce is offering its EJ200 engine to power the first <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">ever <\/span>Turkish-made <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">indigenous <\/span>fighter jet<span class=\"rte rte-comment\"> that is in the making<\/span>, Turkish officials said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Procurement sources said the Ankara government and Rolls Royce may be coming near to a deal depending on what the company&#8217;s solution will entail in terms of production, know-how and export licenses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Under a program dubbed the TFX ,Turkey wants to design, develop and produce its own fighter jet. Political and procurement officials are aiming for <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">at <\/span>2023 for its first test flights, the year when Turkey will be celebrating the republic&#8217;s centennial, although most observers view that target with s<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">c<\/span>kepticism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In October, Rolls-Royce signed a memorandum of understanding with Turkey&#8217;s state scientific research institute to open an &#8220;advanced manufacturing technology center in&#8221; Turkey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The move came shortly after Turkey&#8217;s procurement authorities met in Britain with Rolls-Royce officials to discuss an engine they want to power the TFX.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Under the MOU, Rolls-Royce will work with the TUBITAK research council and related Turkish ministries: science, energy, transport and defense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rolls-Royce invests about \u00a31.2 billion in research and development annually. It operates in more than 50 countries<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">;<\/span> and applies for some 600 patents on new technologies every year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Eurojet Turbo GmbH is a major partner of Rolls-Royce together with MTU, ITP &amp; Avio for offering the EJ200 as a potential engine for the TFX programme. Rolls-Royce <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">says <\/span>said the technology of EJ200 makes it <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">both <\/span>smaller and simpler in layout than current engines of a similar thrust class, while giving it lower fuel consumption and an unprecedented power-to-weight ratio.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first series production Eurofighter Typhoon aircraft were flown in February 2003. The Typhoon flew operational missions over Libya as part of Operation Ellamy, total<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">l<\/span>ing 6,000 engine hours without a reject.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rolls-Royce has so far delivered more than 1,100 EJ2000 engines.
