{"id":56524,"date":"2019-11-15T17:01:21","date_gmt":"2019-11-15T17:01:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2019\/11\/15\/heres-who-just-won-a-contract-to-build-the-armys-heavy-robot\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T00:06:49","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T00:06:49","slug":"heres-who-just-won-a-contract-to-build-the-armys-heavy-robot","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/land\/2019\/11\/15\/heres-who-just-won-a-contract-to-build-the-armys-heavy-robot\/","title":{"rendered":"Here\u2019s who will build the US Army\u2019s heavy common robot"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WASHINGTON \u2014 The U.S. Army has chosen <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/unmanned\/2018\/11\/12\/one-company-wants-to-help-herd-us-army-robots\/\" target=_blank>FLIR\u2019s Kobra robot<\/a> to serve as its heavy version of the Common Robotic System that will be used for explosive ordnance disposal and other heavy-duty jobs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The production contract will run for a period of five years and could be worth up to $109 million.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Army wanted its Common Robotic System-Heavy, or CRS-H, to weigh up to 700 pounds and to carry a variety of sensors and payloads to support missions.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/smr\/unmanned-unleashed\/2017\/04\/12\/army-poised-to-transform-ground-robotics-industry\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/talon-unmanned-ground-vehicle.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Army poised to transform ground robotics industry<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The Army is poised to transform the ground robotics industry over the next year as it launches several competitions to define its future unmanned ground systems fleet.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe Kobra [unmanned ground vehicle] delivers unmatched strength, power and payload support in an easy-to-operate robot package,\u201d according to a FLIR statement sent to Defense News.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kobra has a lift capacity of 330 pounds and can stretch up to eleven-and-a-half feet to get at difficult-to-reach places, but it is also still nimble enough to climb jersey barriers and fit into the back of a standard utility vehicle, according to FLIR.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">FLIR\u2019s legacy business, Endeavor Robotics, won a contract in 2017 to provide the Army with a medium-sized UGV \u2014 the Man Transportable Robotic System Increment II. FLIR is delivering the Centaur UGV for the program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/unmanned\/2019\/02\/15\/flir-set-to-add-endeavor-robotics-to-its-unmanned-future\/\" target=_blank>FLIR bought Endeavor Robotics in February<\/a>, an acquisition that made sense because FLIR\u2019s camera and sensors \u2014 its bread and butter \u2014 have been used on countless manned and unmanned vehicles like those developed by the Massachusetts-based robotics company. FLIR also acquired Prox Dynamics in 2016, the Norwegian maker of the tiny micro-drone \u2014 the Black Hornet \u2014 that is now used as the Army\u2019s soldier borne sensor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Endeavor also competed for the CRS-Individual system \u2014 a man-packable robot that is less than 25 pounds \u2014 but lost to fellow Massachusetts-based robotics company <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2019\/03\/14\/qinetiq-wins-armys-small-ground-robot-competition\/\" target=_blank>QinetiQ North America in March.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For the CRS-H program, FLIR beat out QinetiQ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kobra is also participating in a Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency effort to build a system-of-systems solution that can operate in subterranean environments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The company\u2019s solution consists of the Kobra robot that will enter subterranean environments carrying radio repeaters \u2014based on the company\u2019s small, throwable FirstLook robots \u2014 and drop them off along the way to continue connectivity as it travels deeper underground. The system will also carry a four-legged robot supplied from Ghost Robotics to explore more rugged and difficult terrain as well as a quadcopter that will investigate vertical shafts and other hard to reach places. The winner of the challenge is expected to receive $2 million in 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/land\/2019\/05\/10\/dirty-work-robots-take-on-complex-breach-as-army-evaluates-potential\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/IMG_4035.JPG.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Dirty work: Robots take on complex obstacles in US Army exercise<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Learning by doing, the Army is assessing how robots can be an asset on the battlefield.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The CRS-I and CRS-H programs are part of a larger Army program to streamline its robotics inventory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By necessity, during the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, the Army clamored to buy UGVs that could help provide a level of standoff between soldiers and the dangers faced on the battlefield, mostly improvised explosive devices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Army procured roughly 7,000 UGVs and ended up with a petting zoo of robots from Talons to PacBots to Dragon Runners, to name a few. The service had roughly nine variants of robots used for explosive ordnance disposal, two robots for engineering battalions to conduct route clearance, two for Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (CBRN) tasks and three for contingency and global response forces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Army\u2019s way forward uses just a few common platforms where systems and sensors can be swapped out easily for different missions and which are all controlled using one universal controller.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s been the season for major headway in Army robotics programs across the board.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The service is also underway with development of robotic combat vehicles in light, medium and heavy categories.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/land\/2019\/05\/23\/players-surfacing-for-robotic-combat-vehicle-competition\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/RCV-DEMO.JPG.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Players gather for robotic combat vehicle competition<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The Army is gathering information on robotic combat vehicle capabilities through a rigorous demonstration ahead of the service&#039;s prototyping efforts for light and medium weight variants.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Army invited four teams to compete to build prototypes for its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/digital-show-dailies\/ausa\/2019\/10\/21\/the-field-narrows-in-light-robotic-combat-vehicle-competition\/\" target=_blank>future light RCV <\/a>last month: A Textron, Howe &amp; Howe and FLIR team, a team of QinetiQ and Pratt &amp; Miller, HDT Global and Oshkosh Defense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And three teams were picked earlier this month to move on in the Army\u2019s competition for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2019\/11\/01\/three-teams-move-on-in-medium-sized-robotic-vehicle-prototype-competition\/\" target=_blank>a medium-sized RCV<\/a>: General Dynamics Land Systems, QinetiQ and the Textron, FLIR and Howe &amp; Howe team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Army also awarded, at the end of last month, a contract to GDLS to provide the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2019\/10\/31\/heres-the-robotic-vehicle-that-will-carry-equipment-for-us-troops\/\" target=_blank>Squad Multipurpose Equipment Transport (SMET)<\/a> unmanned vehicle.
