join forces to develop and produce a new European fighter jet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The two companies\u2019 announcement at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/global\/europe\/2018\/04\/23\/lockheed-us-air-force-mount-f-35-sales-pitch-at-berlin-air-show\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" style=\"\" target=\"_blank\">an air show in Berlin<\/a> on Wednesday follows a decision in principle last year by the French and German governments to develop a new fighter jet together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The new aircraft is slated at first to complement and then replace the Eurofighter and Rafale aircraft currently in use, between 2035 and 2040.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dirk Hoke, the CEO of Airbus Defence and Space, said that \u201cnever before has Europe been more determined to safeguard and foster its political and industrial autonomy and sovereignty in the defense sector.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He said the \u201cschedule is tight\u201d and the companies need to start work immediately on a project road map.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside
