LONDON \u2014\u00a0Design of a new fleet of Royal Navy nuclear missile-carrying submarines has advanced\u00a0taken a further step forward <\/span>with the award to BAE Systems of a \u00a3201 million (US $290 million) contract to complete assessment phase work on the boat.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The cash will allow BAE to develop the design of the submarine, including equipment and systems layout, develop-manufacturing processes, and undertake production of early prototypes, the Ministry of Defence said in a statement released Tuesday.Feb 9.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The next phase of the program, known as Successor, is expected later this year subject to parliamentary approval to renew Britain’s nuclear deterrent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Conservative government has committed to building four Trident missile-armed submarines to replace the current Vanguard class of boats currently <\/span>providing Britain\u2019s nuclear deterrent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The \u00a3201 million deal is the final large design payment to BAE under a \u00a33.3 billion assessment phase package earmarked by the previous government for development of Successor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The announcement follows three previous <\/span>funding packages awarded to BAE:\u00a0two awards of\u00a0\u00a3328 million and \u00a3315 million to commence initial design in 2012, followed by \u00a3257 million in 2015 for the detailed design.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nuclear power plant-builder Rolls-Royce and the <\/span>support company Babcock are also being funded for Successor work. by the Government.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Further contract awards to the two companies\u00a0as part of the \u00a33.3 billion <\/span>assessment phase package are possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The Successor program\u00a0is one of the most challenging engineering projects in the world today, and this additional funding will enable us to further mature the design.” said Tony Johns, the managing director of BAE Systems Submarines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A spokeswoman for the MoD said the prototyping effort covered by part of the contract award was aimed at ensuring that the design outputs can be used in the intended manufacturing processes<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“This will involve the fabrication of some representative samples of the boat’s structure, such as diesel fuel tanks, the clean reserve oil tank, the dirty oil tank and a tank for collecting the drains,” she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The government’s strategic defense and security review published in <\/span>last <\/span>November delayed by several years the introduction of the first of the new submarines to the early 2030s.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

BAE had\u00a0previously said it hopes to start construction this year but it is not clear now when a production contract will be signed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The defense review said expected project costs were estimated to rise from \u00a325 billion to \u00a331 billion with a \u00a310 billion fund also to be set aside for contingencies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
