{"id":57744,"date":"2021-09-16T17:32:19","date_gmt":"2021-09-16T17:32:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2021\/09\/16\/british-defense-boss-commiserates-a-bit-with-france-over-australia-submarine-breakup\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T00:17:15","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T00:17:15","slug":"british-defense-boss-commiserates-a-bit-with-france-over-australia-submarine-breakup","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/digital-show-dailies\/dsei\/2021\/09\/16\/british-defense-boss-commiserates-a-bit-with-france-over-australia-submarine-breakup\/","title":{"rendered":"British defense boss commiserates a bit with France over Australia submarine breakup"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">LONDON \u2013 British Defense Secretary Ben Wallace admitted if he were French he would be extremely disappointed over the Australian decision to ax a $65 billion deal with Naval Group to build diesel electric-submarines, but he said the move was done for strategic, not industrial, reasons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI understand Frances\u2019s disappointment at the cancellation of the diesel-electric deal,\u201d Wallace said at the DSEI defense exhibit here on Sept. 16. \u201cIt was a big deal, done in 2016. I would be deeply disappointed on behalf of the industry I represent, of course I would, but fundamentally this is about Australia changing its capability requirements.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The step didn\u2019t amount to a \u201cbetrayal\u201d of France, Wallace told the BBC earlier in the day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The British defense minister said on a smaller scale he took similar decisions every day to cancel projects, sometimes upsetting companies, but he had an obligation to taxpayers to change direction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Would Britain do a similar deal with other nations seeking nuclear submarines? Wallace thought not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFirst of all, it\u2019s based on the Five Eyes agreement. They are one of our closest, oldest, allies,\u201d Wallace said, referring to the Australians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He stressed Britain wasn\u2019t the only player in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/congress\/2021\/09\/15\/new-pact-with-the-us-and-uk-is-set-to-sink-australias-historic-submarine-buy-from-france\/\">saga<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe are joined at the hip with the U.S. \u2013 it takes two to agree on these types of approaches. That\u2019s why on this type of program you don\u2019t get one without the other,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Wallace said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/global\/asia-pacific\/2021\/09\/16\/australia-details-its-nuclear-submarine-ambitions\/\">Australia<\/a> first approached the U.S. and Britain in March. It started, he said, with Australia wanting to have a better capability to defend itself and protect its interests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe have all seen China investing more than anybody else on the planet increasing its armed forces,\u201d said Wallace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI think we should recognize Australia is joining that very small club of nations that have nuclear submarines and it did it for strategic advantage,\u201d said the defense secretary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most of the French anger over the Australian decision has been directed at the U.S., but Wallace said the three nations had too much in common for a lasting dent in relations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIf we all step back, France, Britain and the U.S. agree on so many things. We share same the values,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">BAE System is currently building a fleet of Astute- class nuclear powered attack submarines and designing a fleet of Trident ballistic missile submarines for the Royal Navy at its Barrow yard in northern England.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The company has a substantial stake in the Australian shipbuilding industry in part due to Canberra\u2019s 2018 selection of the companies Type 26 frigate for anti-submarine duties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere will be a boost for the British defense industry in this collaboration because we have sub-systems that Australia doesn\u2019t have that we will be able to offer into that,\u201d Wallace told the BBC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Wallace suggested there might even be a consolation prize for French industry resulting from the change of industrial partners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThales, a great success, a French company with a very large workforce in the UK benefits from our submarine industry and [they] have a potential benefit from the new deal.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The company was quick to announce in a statement on Sept. 15 that its business outlook would remain untouched by the Australian decision to drop
