{"id":58018,"date":"2020-02-06T22:11:35","date_gmt":"2020-02-06T22:11:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2020\/02\/06\/after-fixes-to-hydraulics-army-gears-up-for-second-stab-at-test-of-new-assault-bridge\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T00:19:36","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T00:19:36","slug":"after-fixes-to-hydraulics-army-gears-up-for-second-stab-at-test-of-new-assault-bridge","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/land\/2020\/02\/06\/after-fixes-to-hydraulics-army-gears-up-for-second-stab-at-test-of-new-assault-bridge\/","title":{"rendered":"After fixes to hydraulics, US Army gears up for second stab at test of new assault bridge"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WASHINGTON \u2014 The U.S. Army is gearing up for a second try at an initial operational test for its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/pentagon\/2016\/09\/06\/army-drs-set-to-integrate-new-bridging-system-on-tanks\/\" target=\"_blank\">new Joint Assault Bridge, or JAB, <\/a>in June after struggling through its first attempt in April 2019 due to issues related to the hydraulic system and training.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A report released this month from the Pentagon\u2019s chief weapons tester revealed the JAB, during its first initial operational test and evaluation (IOT&amp;E) held at Fort Bliss, Texas, experienced poor system reliability and limited availability. \u201cThe result was insufficient data for [the director of operational test and evaluation] DOT&amp;E to determine operational effectiveness,\u201d the report stated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe issues we found were primarily related to the hydraulic system or training issues,\u201d Steve Rienstra, the Army\u2019s product manager for bridging within the Program Executive Office Combat Support &amp; Combat Service Support, told Defense News in a Feb. 6 interview.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The new JAB capability is intended to be a significant enhancement to the maneuverability of the Army\u2019s combat forces, particularly armored brigade combat teams with M1 Abrams Tanks and Bradley Infantry Fighting Vehicles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe JAB is faster, more survivable and more sustainable than its predecessor,\u201d the M48\/M60 chassis-based Armored Vehicle Launched Brigade system resident in the armored brigade combat teams\u2019 brigade engineer battalions and in mobility augmentation companies supporting the teams\u2019 operations, Rienstra said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Leonardo DRS is the prime contractor for the JAB, which is built on top of an M1A1 Abrams tank chassis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since the IOT&amp;E, the Army has focused \u201ca tremendous amount of effort\u201d to improve the hydraulic system and training, Rienstra said.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/land\/2019\/05\/10\/dirty-work-robots-take-on-complex-breach-as-army-evaluates-potential\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/IMG_4035.JPG.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Dirty work: Robots take on complex obstacles in US Army exercise<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Learning by doing, the Army is assessing how robots can be an asset on the battlefield.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Leonardo DRS has \u201cdone a really exceptional job of doing a comprehensive deep dive into the root cause analysis so when you see hydraulic lines that are failing, it\u2019s really on the manufacturer to figure that out,\u201d he said. \u201cThey went back through, came up with an aggressive list of design and production corrections, and they\u2019ve implemented that on all the systems that are going forward.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The new and improved systems are going to be tested in June in a second attempt at an IOT&amp;E at Fort Riley, Kansas, Rienstra said. \u201cThe systems that are going to the field will all be much more capable from a durability perspective based on improved hydraulics,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And testing ahead of the big event has shown promise that the IOT&amp;E will have different results. The Army brought in soldiers with experience on legacy equipment to support the tests. After 1,000 miles of operation and more than 200 bridge launches and retrievals, the systems \u201cdid not have a single hydraulic failure,\u201d Rienstra said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The service is also working to revamp its training ahead of the second IOT&amp;E after realizing that the maintainers using the equipment not only needed training on the new bridge launch mechanism, but also on the M1A1 Abrams chassis. The service is also conducting its last preparatory event out at Yuma Proving Ground, Arizona.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Equipment will be moved beginning in March to Fort Riley, and training will take place over April and May. The actual test will happen over the course of three weeks in June, Rienstra said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The service is pushing to be able to keep the JAB systems within the 1st Engineer Battalion of the 1st Infantry Division as well as get a materiel release following the IOT&amp;E.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While the DOT&amp;E report makes the IOT&amp;E \u201clook like bad news,\u201d the extra year of testing and improvement is going to result in a \u201cmuch improved product,\u201d Rienstra
