The Navy is trying to walk some of that back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">LCS is a trimaran hull <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/pentagon\/2016\/07\/05\/austal-takes-115-million-lcs-write-off\/\" target=_blank>built by Austal USA <\/a>in Alabama, and LCS is a monohull designed by Lockheed Martin and built by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/naval\/2019\/12\/20\/lockheed-inks-2-billion-contract-for-saudi-frigate\/\" target=_blank>Fincantieri\u2019s Marinette Marine<\/a> shipyard in Wisconsin. The ships\u2019 systems are as different from each other as they are in appearance, with one of the main differences being the computer brain that runs the platform\u2019s weapons and sensors \u2014 known as a combat management system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That\u2019s going to change, said Kitty Sutherland, the integrated combat systems deputy program manager for the LCS program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOur combat management system is being upgraded so they\u2019ll be common across both variants,\u201d Sutherland said. \u201cThat engineering has started in some small respect, but it really kicks off in FY2021, and by fiscal year 2023 we are working really hard \u2026 to make sure [we] get that installed on these ships.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDoing this quickly is about getting combat capability to these ships faster and support the ships faster.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/naval\/2019\/01\/14\/the-future-of-the-us-surface-fleet-one-combat-system-to-rule-them-all\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/ossn.JPG.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">The future of the US surface fleet: One combat system to rule them all<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">As the U.S. Navy\u2019s surface fleet moves into 2019, a radical shift is coalescing among its leaders.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The system will be based on a COMBATSS-21 system, which is an Aegis derivative. It will be integrated into the Common Source Library. The CSL is part of the surface Navy\u2019s effort to have a common combat system across all its platforms<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What the surface fleet wants is a single combat system that runs on every ship, and runs everything on the ship, and that doesn\u2019t mind what hardware you are running so long as you have the computing power for it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The goal here is that if a sailor who is trained on a big-deck amphibious ship transfers to a destroyer, no extra training will be necessary to run the equipment on the destroyer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat\u2019s an imperative going forward \u2014 we have to get to one, integrated combat system,\u201d Rear Adm. Ron Boxall, the former chief of naval operations\u2019 director of surface warfare, said in a December 2018 interview at the Pentagon with Defense News.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/digital-show-dailies\/navy-league\/2019\/04\/25\/off-the-eastern-seaboard-a-us-navy-missile-test-could-make-big-waves\/\" target=_blank>Common Source Library<\/a>, developed for the Navy by Lockheed, begins moving the Navy down this path of a single, unified combat system.
