{"id":58046,"date":"2018-04-16T17:36:37","date_gmt":"2018-04-16T17:36:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2018\/04\/16\/turkey-provides-tax-breaks-loans-to-attract-investment-in-local-defense-programs\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T00:18:18","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T00:18:18","slug":"turkey-provides-tax-breaks-loans-to-attract-investment-in-local-defense-programs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/industry\/2018\/04\/16\/turkey-provides-tax-breaks-loans-to-attract-investment-in-local-defense-programs\/","title":{"rendered":"Turkey provides tax breaks, loans to attract investment in local defense programs"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">ANKARA, Turkey \u2014 In an effort to boost <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/naval\/2018\/04\/16\/turkish-shipyards-join-forces-to-develop-engine\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" style=\"\" target=\"_blank\">indigenous defense programs<\/a>, Turkey is providing incentives, which include generous tax breaks, tax reductions and exemptions from import duties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The incentives include additional levies and soft loans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In just the first two months of 2018, the government incorporated 13 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/unmanned\/2018\/03\/06\/unmanned-tech-ambitions-shape-turkeys-future-military\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">defense investment projects<\/a> submitted by 12 companies into its incentives program. These investments are worth $350 million.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The largest investment program benefiting from the incentives during the January\/February time frame was Roketsan\u2019s new production line. The state-controlled missile maker\u2019s investment plan is worth $217 million.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Military electronics specialist Aselsan, Turkey\u2019s largest defense company, has won incentives support for its new $35 million investment in electronic systems and new $40 million investment in aerial and missile systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Official figures show a boom in private defense investment, too. According to the Ministry of Economy, $1.9 billion of defense investment by private companies will be subsidized by government incentives this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These investment plans include a total of $220 million for armored vehicles, a laser gun and unmanned land vehicles; and $125 million in diesel tank engines by armored vehicle producer BMC, a Turkish-Qatari private joint venture.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/industry\/techwatch\/2018\/02\/07\/turkey-may-create-a-golden-cage-its-version-of-israels-iron-dome\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/636011548532804970-nightjpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Turkey may create a Golden Cage \u2015 its version of Israel\u2019s Iron Dome<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Turkey\u2019s Iron Dome version would operate like a rapid reaction network, hitting enemy rockets and missiles at short range.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Private firm Most Makina will receive government incentives for its planned $385 million investment in steel equipment for defense systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Turkish Aerospace Industries, or TAI, will invest $1.2 billion in its TF-X program, an ambitious plan for the design, development and production of Turkey\u2019s first indigenous fighter jet.
