{"id":58359,"date":"2018-06-28T14:47:30","date_gmt":"2018-06-28T14:47:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2018\/06\/28\/report-australia-selects-bae-for-frigate-design\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T00:16:44","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T00:16:44","slug":"report-australia-selects-bae-for-frigate-design","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/global\/asia-pacific\/2018\/06\/28\/report-australia-selects-bae-for-frigate-design\/","title":{"rendered":"BAE reportedly comes out on top in Australia\u2019s future frigate showdown"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WASHINGTON \u2015 In a move that could send shock waves through the global frigate market, Australia appears poised to announce that it has selected BAE Systems\u2019 Type 26 design for its new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/global\/asia-pacific\/2018\/06\/27\/australia-cleared-to-buy-185-million-in-aegis-equipment\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">future frigate<\/a> design. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Wall Street Journal reported Thursday that on June 29, the Australian military will make the formal announcement that BAE has won the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/naval\/2016\/04\/18\/bae-fincantieri-and-navantia-ships-on-australian-shortlist\/\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\">AU$35 billion (U.S. $26 billion) contest<\/a> to build nine frigates, which are being designed with anti-submarine warfare in mind. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Under the competition guidelines, construction on the ship is scheduled to begin at the shipyards at Osborne in 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The design beat out two strong challenges from ships that, unlike the Type 26, already exist.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/naval\/2017\/05\/17\/australia-prime-minister-shipbuilding-plan-is-an-end-to-the-boom-and-bust-pattern\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/635975422435467984-submarine-turnbull-gettyimages-524343288jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Australia prime minister: Shipbuilding plan is &#8216;an end to the boom and bust pattern&#8217;<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull launched Australia&#039;s long-awaited naval shipbuilding plan on May 16. The document will oversee construction of submarines, frigates and Offshore Patrol Vessels, costing A$89 billion (US $66.12 billion), in Australian shipyards.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The move is a major blow to Fincantieri, which had been pushing its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/naval\/2018\/05\/30\/we-spent-3-days-on-a-top-ffgx-contender-heres-what-you-need-to-know\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">anti-submarine warfare FREMM<\/a> for the requirement. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/naval\/2016\/04\/18\/bae-fincantieri-and-navantia-ships-on-australian-shortlist\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">Spanish shipbuilder Navantia<\/a>, which already has a major operation in Australia, was also a strong competitor for the contract with its F-100 frigate design. In 2007, Navantia was selected to build the Australian air warfare destroyer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The competition also has implications for the Canadian frigate program, which is expected to announce a winner later this year, said Byron Callan, an defense analyst with Capital Alpha Partners. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe win is a positive for BAE because it\u2019s the first international order for the Type 26 and it may help position that ship type for Canada\u2019s Surface Combatant program that should be decided in late 2018,\u201d Callan said. <br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Canada has a 15-ship requirement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The unit price for the hull is about $850 million to $1 billion, which does not include some government-furnished systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The U.K. has already <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/naval\/2018\/03\/02\/british-type-26-frigates-to-get-lockheed-missile-launcher\/\">agreed to buy eight<\/a> of the Type 26 designs, with the goal of fielding them in the mid-2020s. BAE started building the first of three Type 26s it has under contract last year.
