The program will culminate in a demonstration of the system for the Army\u2019s Rapid Capabilities and Critical Technologies Office, according to the statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe high power, compact laser weapon subsystem prototype that GA-EMS will deliver under this contract will produce a lethal output greater than anything fielded to date,\u201d Scott Forney, president of GA-EMS, said in the statement. \u201cThis technology represents a leap-ahead capability for air and missile defense that is necessary to support the Army\u2019s modernization efforts and defeat next-generation threats in a multi-domain battlespace.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The laser system uses two seventh-generation laser heads in \u201ca very compact and lightweight package,\u201d said Michael Perry, GA-EMS\u2019 vice president for lasers and advanced sensors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cRecent architectural improvements have enabled our single-beam DG Lasers to achieve comparable beam quality to fiber lasers in a very simple design without the need for beam combination,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">GA-EMS and Boeing joined forces last year to build the high-energy laser, announcing its teaming arrangement at the Association of the U.S. Army\u2019s annual conference in October. Under the agreement, the companies planned to create a 100-kilowatt laser that would be scalable to 250 kilowatts, they said at the time. The weapon would be able to operate as a stand-alone system or integrated on ground vehicles, ships and aircraft, the companies said.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/land\/2021\/08\/18\/northrop-bows-out-of-competition-to-build-laser-weapon-for-strykers\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Stryker-MMHEL-comp-26.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Northrop bows out of competition to build laser weapon for Strykers<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">A Northrop Grumman team competing to integrate a 50-kilowatt laser onto a Stryker combat vehicle ran into issues ahead of a combat shoot-off this summer, which resulted in an early exit from the program.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The RCCTO is already working under a contract modification with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/digital-show-dailies\/ausa\/2021\/10\/12\/lockheed-plans-to-pitch-air-defense-laser-weapon-in-future-army-competition\/\" target=\"_blank\">Lockheed Martin <\/a>and Dynetics team to develop a 300-kilowatt laser capability for the Army\u2019s Indirect Fires Protection Capability, or IFPC, which will defend fixed and semi-fixed assets against cruise missiles, unmanned aircraft, rockets, artillery and mortars using interceptors, a laser weapon and<a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/digital-show-dailies\/smd\/2019\/08\/07\/the-armys-indirect-fires-protection-system-is-getting-a-high-power-microwave\/\" target=\"_blank\"> a high-power microwave capability<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Army teamed up with the Office of the Secretary of Defense on the program to develop a 300-kilowatt laser weapon. A first demonstration of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/industry\/2019\/05\/10\/rolls-royce-unveils-hybrid-power-system-for-laser-weapons\/\" target=\"_blank\">high-energy laser capability<\/a> is expected in August 2022, Lt. Gen. L. Neil Thurgood, the RCCTO\u2019s director, told Defense News in an interview at the AUSA event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2019\/05\/16\/dynetics-lockheed-team-beats-out-raytheon-to-build-100-kilowatt-laser-weapon\/\" target=\"_blank\">Lockheed and Dynetics team beat out Raytheon<\/a> in a head-to-head competition in 2019 to develop a 100-kilowatt-class laser weapon as part of the High Energy Laser Tactical Vehicle Demonstrator, or HEL TVD, laser system. The Army modified the contract later to expand the effort to develop the 300-kilowatt capability for the IFPC program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The contracted awarded to the Boeing and GA-EMS team is not part of the Army\u2019s IFPC-HEL prototyping effort. Instead, the RCCTO received an unsolicited whitepaper through a broad agency announcement and completed a technical evaluation of the whitepaper, resulting in a decision to pursue a proposed demonstration that will determine \u201cthe feasibility of distributed gain laser technology for use in future Army weapon systems,\u201d Craig Robin, the RCCTO\u2019S deputy director and Directed Energy Project Office lead, told Defense News in a Nov. 3 statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The funded effort will include a preliminary design review and a critical design review
