The Block IV subs primarily add reliability features to the boat that should increase its life span.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/naval\/2019\/12\/06\/heres-what-you-need-to-know-about-the-us-navys-deadly-and-expensive-new-attack-submarines\/\" target=_blank>The Block V<\/a>, which was awarded last year, adds acoustics upgrades. Eight of the boats will have the Virginia Payload Module. The VPM is designed to triple the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/naval\/2017\/08\/21\/raytheon-marks-milestone-for-its-tomahawk-looks-to-the-future\/\">Tomahawk cruise missile<\/a> capacity of the Virginia-class subs, a move designed to offset the pending retirement of the Ohio-class guided-missile subs, which have a 154-Tomahawk capacity.
