Those include Buckley AFB, Colorado; Fort Smith Airport, Arkansas; Hulman Field, Indiana; Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, Texas; and Selfridge Air National Guard Base, Michigan,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a statement announcing that Fort Smith Regional Airport was under consideration, Arkansas Sen. Tom Cotton said that Air Force Secretary Barbara Barrett signed a memorandum July 6 to establish the training center.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He also revealed that Singapore \u2014 which is a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/digital-show-dailies\/singapore-airshow\/2020\/02\/11\/how-the-f-35-could-be-a-game-changer-for-singapore\/\" target=_blank>Foreign Military Sales customer for the F-35B<\/a>, having been cleared earlier this year to purchase four aircraft with an option for eight more \u2014 wants to co-locate its F-16 squadron, currently based at Luke Air Force Base, with its F-35s as a \u201clong-term Foreign Military Sales location.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/air\/2020\/05\/28\/images-reveal-singapore-jets-equipped-with-reconnaissance-pods-a-capability-thought-missing-for-15-years\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/635846362439216603-526660jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Images reveal Singapore jets equipped with reconnaissance pods \u2014 a capability thought missing for 15 years<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Defense News has been given access to several images of different F-16D Block 52 Fighting Falcons in service with the Republic of Singapore Air Force, revealing the aircraft are equipped with Elbit Condor 2 Long Range Oblique Photography systems on their centerline station.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Air Force\u2019s Stefanek explained that this is \u201cto make room for additional USAF\/Partner F-35s at Luke AFB,\u201d and that once the new FMS F-35 training location is selected, that location will also be considered for Singapore\u2019s F-16 training detachment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A statement from Singapore\u2019s defense ministry confirmed that Singapore\u2019s F-35Bs, which are expected to be delivered in 2026, will be deployed in the continental United States for training and in-depth evaluation. It added that \u201cdiscussions on possible training locations are ongoing with the U.S. Department of Defense,\u201d and it will carefully evaluate the options to ensure that the eventual location can meet its needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Defense News understands that the future F-35 FMS training base would host some countries and their jets on a rotational basis, while others might maintain a permanent presence. The latter group would likely include land-scarce Singapore, which already maintains permanent aircraft training detachments in the U.S. in addition to the Luke AFB-based F-16s. The Asian nation is also setting up a rotating training presence in Guam for its fighter aircraft.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most of the shortlisted bases currently host few or no permanent flying units, and none of them are currently earmarked to operate F-35s in the future. It will take significant capital to set up an F-35 FMS training facility because existing infrastructure will need modifications to support the fifth-generation stealth fighter\u2019s operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Luke AFB, which is located at the outskirts of Phoenix, Arizona, will reach its aircraft hosting capacity in the coming years. Its resident U.S. Air Force squadrons are set to convert from F-16s to the F-35A, and the base itself will continue to be the training location for F-35 international partner nations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This means the two international F-16 training detachments currently on base \u2014 Singapore and Taiwan \u2014 will have to move. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/congress\/2019\/08\/16\/trump-oks-f-16-sale-to-taiwan-amid-china-tensions\/\" target=_blank>Taiwan\u2019s F-16 jets<\/a> were set to move to the nearby Arizona Air National Guard base in Tucson, but local media reported in August 2019 that the country is instead seeking to move to a base closer to the Pacific coast to better accommodate Taiwanese pilots
