{"id":59501,"date":"2021-04-26T18:04:47","date_gmt":"2021-04-26T18:04:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2021\/04\/26\/poll-more-say-us-defense-isnt-strong-enough-but-most-are-content\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T00:23:41","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T00:23:41","slug":"poll-more-say-us-defense-isnt-strong-enough-but-most-are-content","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/congress\/2021\/04\/26\/poll-more-say-us-defense-isnt-strong-enough-but-most-are-content\/","title":{"rendered":"Poll: More say US defense isn\u2019t strong enough, but most are content"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WASHINGTON \u2015 As progressives work to cut <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/breaking-news\/2021\/04\/09\/biden-requests-715b-for-pentagon-hinting-at-administrations-future-priorities\/\" target=_blank>President Joe Biden\u2019s flat defense budget request for 2022<\/a> \u2015 and Republicans, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/congress\/2021\/03\/17\/mcconnell-challenges-biden-to-boost-defense-budget-against-china\/\" target=_blank>including Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell<\/a>, R-Ky., push to increase it \u2015 public views are not expected to provide much momentum to either side.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/congress\/2021\/04\/15\/bidens-afghanistan-pullout-gets-mixed-reaction-in-congress\/\" target=_blank>Biden\u2019s pullout from the 20-year-old war in Afghanistan<\/a> isn\u2019t seen as an animating issue either, according to a Gallup poll released Friday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Though 35 percent of people surveyed said U.S. national defense isn\u2019t strong enough (up from 25 percent a year ago), 50 percent said the country\u2019s defense is \u201cjust right,\u201d according to the poll. By contrast, 14 percent said America\u2019s national defense is stronger than it needs to be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Asked specifically about defense spending, 42 percent saw current levels as \u201cabout right,\u201d with a slim 26-30 split between \u201ctoo little\u201d and \u201ctoo much.\u201d Last year, 50 percent said spending was \u201cabout right,\u201d with 17 percent saying \u201ctoo little\u201d and 30 percent saying \u201ctoo much.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe are in a period of relative public quiescence on the military spending front. Americans\u2019 views of military spending and the state of the country\u2019s defense are about average for what we have measured in past decades,\u201d Gallup senior scientist Frank Newport said in an <a href=\"https:\/\/news.gallup.com\/opinion\/polling-matters\/348857\/defense-budget-afghanistan-withdrawal-not-hot-button-issues.aspx\" target=_blank>analysis<\/a> last week. \u201cThere is neither an unusually strong feeling on the part of the average American that the military must be strengthened, nor that defense spending should be cut back.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/congress\/2021\/04\/21\/us-troops-dollars-exiting-afghanistan-could-fight-terror-top-commander-tells-congress\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/GettyImages-1184482763.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">US troops, dollars exiting Afghanistan could fight terror, top commander tells Congress<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The top U.S. commander in the Mideast told lawmakers Tuesday some troops exiting Afghanistan will stay in the region for counter-terror operations and suggested some could be a \u201clever\u201d against Russia and China.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Newport pointed to a Gallup update in January that showed 74 percent of Americans are very or somewhat satisfied with the nation\u2019s military strength and preparedness, putting the issue sixth in a list of 21 issues tested.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Biden\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2021\/04\/14\/biden-says-keeping-us-troops-in-afghanistan-past-this-summer-makes-no-sense-to-me\/\" target=_blank>announcement<\/a> that the U.S. would begin a full troop withdrawal from Afghanistan in May also aligns with public opinion (where there is any), and it\u2019s unlikely to see pushback. Newport said withdrawing all U.S. troops was the most frequently chosen response, at 32 percent, followed by another 29 percent who wanted troop levels decreased, according to an AP-NORC poll last September.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI do not see strong evidence that this decision is going to produce significant pushback from the American public,\u201d Newport said, adding that not only do more than 6 in 10 Americans appear to be OK with a decrease or total withdrawal, but most Americans polled said they don\u2019t follow any news of the conflict.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While mostly Republicans have criticized the move as a risk that Afghanistan will once again becoming a launch pad for terrorist attacks, 58 percent of voters approve of the job Biden is doing fighting terrorism. That\u2019s according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/hilltv\/what-americas-thinking\/548704-poll-58-percent-approve-of-bidens-job-on-fighting-terrorism\" target=_blank>Hill-HarrisX poll <\/a>conducted just days after Biden\u2019s announcement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Earlier this month, Biden\u2019s request for $753 billion in national security funding, an increase of 1.6 percent, saw criticism from across the ideological spectrum. Rep. Mark Pocan, D-Wis., has ripped that amount as a wasteful amount coming in at 3.6 times larger than China\u2019s defense budget. A group of Senate Republicans led by McConnell argued it was not enough to compete with Beijing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cU.S. military power enhances all our other tools and represents the best deterrent against near-term threats posed by [China\u2019s] People\u2019s Liberation Army,\u201d McConnell wrote with Senate Armed Services Committee ranking member Jim Inhofe, R-Okla., and others. \u201cIt is not tough talk alone that will get Beijing\u2019s attention, but American defense spending and combat-credible American forces in theater.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2021\/03\/10\/trust-in-the-military-is-dropping-significantly-new-survey-suggests\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/6549917.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Trust in the military is dropping significantly, new survey suggests<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">About 56 percent of Americans said they have great trust in the military, down significantly in recent years.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The China focus does dovetail with public opinion. In March, 45 percent of Americans <a href=\"https:\/\/news.gallup.com\/poll\/337457\/new-high-perceptions-china-greatest-enemy.aspx\" target=_blank>polled by Gallup<\/a> said China is the greatest enemy of the U.S., more than double the percentage who said so in 2020. China last ranked No. 1 in 2014, while Russia topped the list in 2020, 2019 and 2014.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Responses on defense spending questions sometimes skew more strongly in one direction. Just after President Ronald Reagan took office, 51 percent of the public felt there was too little spent on national defense and the military (an all time high) before sentiment changed in his second term and carried over to the first years of the George H.W. Bush administration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sentiment that national defense is \u201cabout right\u201d is usually the most prevalent, and while it has trended upward every year since 2016, it fell this year from a high of 62 percent. The answer \u201cstronger than it needs to be\u201d tends to poll in the low double digits without fluctuating much from year to year.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As
