{"id":59644,"date":"2018-03-09T17:14:44","date_gmt":"2018-03-09T17:14:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2018\/03\/09\/likely-surprise-for-bidders-lockheed-to-award-sonar-contract-this-year\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T00:26:26","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T00:26:26","slug":"likely-surprise-for-bidders-lockheed-to-award-sonar-contract-this-year","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/industry\/2018\/03\/09\/likely-surprise-for-bidders-lockheed-to-award-sonar-contract-this-year\/","title":{"rendered":"Likely a surprise for bidders, Lockheed to award sonar contract this year"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">PARIS \u2014 French electronics company Thales expects Lockheed Martin to pick a supplier of an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/naval\/2017\/04\/18\/components-selection-ramps-up-in-massive-french-australian-submarine-deal\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">acoustic suite of sonar equipment for an Australian program<\/a> early next year, while the U.S. firm has told Defense News the contract will be awarded this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI expect a selection, a contract, by Lockheed Martin and validated by the Commonwealth (of Australia) probably not before the end of the year,&#8221; Thales Chairman and CEO Patrice Caine said March 6 at a media conference on 2017 financial results. &#8220;We could say early in 2019.&#8221;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thales is \u201cin discussion\u201d with Lockheed, according to the executive.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Those talks are related to a competition held by Lockheed for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/industry\/techwatch\/2018\/02\/12\/thales-to-develop-sonar-technology-for-ballistic-missile-sub\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" style=\"\" target=\"_blank\">sonars and other equipment<\/a>. The Australian government selected the U.S. company as its combat system integrator for the AU$50 billion (U.S. $39 billion) program in which France\u2019s Naval Group is designing, building and servicing 12 diesel-electric boats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thales hopes to win the sonar selection, which is expected to generate sales worth \u20ac1 billion (U.S. $1.2 billion) for its Australian subsidiary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In following up on Caine\u2019s estimate, Lockheed Martin Australia told Defense News a contract is expected later this year. The company noted that a selection of sonar arrays is on schedule and a request for quote was sent last week to industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The company declined to give a value on the contract, as the competitive process is still underway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Australia and France are major markets for Thales as the two nations plan to boost their respective defense budgets for the coming years, signaling a return to \u201csignificant\u201d increases in mature markets, Caine said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That boost in spending reflects geopolitical tension and security threats. Australia plans to increase domestic defense spending and aims to be one of the top 10 arms exporters.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">France seeks to boost capabilities in intelligence gathering, innovation and digital systems \u2014 key industrial areas for Thales, the executive noted.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Thales hopes to win the sonar
