{"id":60271,"date":"2021-02-25T19:52:03","date_gmt":"2021-02-25T19:52:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2021\/02\/25\/to-early-to-say-when-b-52-engine-contract-will-be-awarded-air-force-general-says\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T00:29:01","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T00:29:01","slug":"to-early-to-say-when-b-52-engine-contract-will-be-awarded-air-force-general-says","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/smr\/air-force-priorities\/2021\/02\/25\/to-early-to-say-when-b-52-engine-contract-will-be-awarded-air-force-general-says\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Too early to say\u2019 when B-52 engine contract will be awarded"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WASHINGTON \u2014 This summer, the U.S. Air Force expects to have all the data it needs from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/smr\/global-strike\/2019\/09\/16\/us-air-force-nears-battle-over-next-b-52-engine\/\" target=_blank>three defense companies<\/a> competing to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/air\/2020\/05\/20\/the-air-force-launches-a-contest-to-replace-the-b-52s-engine\/\" target=_blank>replace the B-52 bomber\u2019s engines<\/a>, but it is still \u201ctoo early to say\u201d when a contract will be awarded, a top general said Feb. 25.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The service is waiting for the three competitors\u2014 General Electric, Rolls-Royce, and Pratt &amp; Whitney \u2014 to provide more information about proposals each company submitted last year, according to Gen. Timothy Ray, who leads Air Force Global Strike Command.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe request for proposals is out,\u201d he told reporters during a roundtable hosted during the Air Force Association\u2019s virtual Aerospace Warfare Symposium. \u201cWe should have this summer the answers back from the competitors to be considered. And so then, from that process, we\u2019ll go from there.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Air Force operates 76 B-52s, each outfitted with eight TF33 engines. The service plans to order 608 new engines, plus spares and support, from the winner of the B-52 Commercial Engine Replacement Program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It released a solicitation to industry in May 2020 that initially projected a contract award to occur in June 2021. However, Ray acknowledged he is unsure when the Air Force will complete source selection, although he bristled at the suggestion that the program was delayed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis is not being [dragged] out. It is on time. In fact, it is several years early,\u201d he said, pointing to work each of the companies have done on digital prototype engines, which the service believes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/digital-show-dailies\/paris-air-show\/2019\/06\/26\/air-force-pushes-back-on-house-lawmakers-b-52-engine-replacement-concerns\/\" target=_blank>has shaved more than a year<\/a> off the development process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Each of the competitors is offering modified versions of off-the-shelf engine designs. Pratt &amp; Whitney, which manufactured the TF33 currently onboard the B-52, proposed its PW800. GE Aviation offered the CF34-10 and Passport engines, and Rolls-Royce put forward its F130 engine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The B-52 is expected to remain in service through
