{"id":60616,"date":"2022-04-28T18:52:15","date_gmt":"2022-04-28T18:52:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2022\/04\/28\/future-ngad-fighter-jets-could-cost-hundreds-of-millions-apiece\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T00:30:31","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T00:30:31","slug":"future-ngad-fighter-jets-could-cost-hundreds-of-millions-apiece","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/air\/2022\/04\/28\/future-ngad-fighter-jets-could-cost-hundreds-of-millions-apiece\/","title":{"rendered":"Future NGAD fighter jets could cost \u2018hundreds of millions\u2019 apiece"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WASHINGTON \u2014 The U.S. Air Force\u2019s secretive <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/smr\/air-force-priorities\/2021\/02\/26\/air-force-general-worried-us-wont-field-sixth-gen-fighter-in-time-to-beat-china\/\" target=\"_blank\">Next Generation Air Dominance<\/a> future fighter program could be the most expensive aircraft program in history, with each piloted, sixth-generation aircraft expected to cost hundreds of millions of dollars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When asked about the price tag for NGAD during a Wednesday appearance before the House Armed Services Committee, Air Force Secretary Frank Kendall did not specify exactly how much an individual aircraft could cost, but said the service was talking about \u201cmultiple\u201d hundreds of millions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis is a number that\u2019s going to get your attention,\u201d Kendall said. \u201cIt\u2019s going to be an expensive airplane.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That would be more than twice the F-35\u2032s price tag of at least $80 million apiece.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kendall said NGAD will be \u201cincredibly effective,\u201d but that it will have to be accompanied by less expensive platforms to extend its reach in combat, which he envisions as teams of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/air\/2022\/03\/18\/air-force-aims-to-sharpen-vision-for-teaming-pilots-with-drones\/\" target=\"_blank\">autonomous drone wingmen<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Air Force doesn\u2019t have an estimate on how much the NGAD\u2019s autonomous wingmen could cost. But in his keynote speech to the Air Force Association\u2019s March conference in Orlando, Florida, Kendall said the service wants those combat drones to cost no more than half as much as their manned counterparts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But if NGAD\u2019s manned component will cost several hundred million dollars apiece, that suggests the wingmen may cost as much or more than an F-35.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The NGAD program is so far taking the proper steps in its development phase to hold sustainment costs down in the long term, Kendall said. This is being done by using modular designs and interfaces the government controls to ensure aircraft can easily receive upgrades and maintenance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kendall said this strategy will also lead to competition, which will further drive down costs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s worth the time and the effort in the earlier phases of a program like NGAD to get those things right because you\u2019re going to pay for what you did much later in sustainment, with much bigger dollars,\u201d Kendall said. \u201cAnd from what I\u2019ve seen of the NGAD program so far, that approach has been taken.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In response to concerns raised by Rep. Donald Norcross, D-N.J., that the NGAD\u2019s schedule may be \u201csliding to the right,\u201d Kendall said the Air Force is looking to field the NGAD in the early 2030s.
