They want your suggestions"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WASHINGTON \u2015 The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency is seeking ideas for payloads to use in the DARPA Launch Challenge, a competition focused on succesfully deploying assets to low-Earth orbit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A recent request for information from the U.S. Defense Department agency solicits ideas on \u201cpotential payloads to use in conjunction\u201d with the Launch Challenge, with a maximum allowable weight of 500 kilograms, or 1,102 pounds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The challenge seeks to \u201cdemonstrate the ability to launch payloads to orbit on extremely short notice, with no prior knowledge of the payload, destination orbit or launch site, and do it not just once, but twice, in a matter of days,\u201d according to the agency\u2019s description.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As space becomes an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/space\/2018\/07\/06\/launching-the-sixth-branch-of-the-us-armed-forces\/\" target=\"_blank\">increasingly important security domain<\/a>, DARPA is hoping to spur development of launch vehicles that will allow the Pentagon to more frequently and more easily bring cargo, such as satellites, to orbit than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/space\/2018\/06\/22\/us-air-force-announces-rocket-deal-with-spacex-for-military-satellite\/\" target=\"_blank\">larger rocket contracts<\/a> allow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a clue to what assets the Pentagon would like to carry into space, the RFI specifies that payloads \u201cthat consist of multiple quantities of small spacecraft (e.g., CubeSat-class) with a single interface (ie: dispenser) to the launch vehicle are also of interest.\u201d CubeSat satellites are less than 10-by\u221210-by\u221210 centimenters, and such <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/newsletters\/military-space-report\/2018\/03\/14\/why-industry-wants-the-pentagon-to-consider-small-satellites\/\" target=_blank>small satellites<\/a> can be used for studies on space technology and Earth observation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Responses for payload suggestions to use in the challenge are due July 27.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>DARPA is hoping to spur development of launch vehicles that will allow the Pentagon to more frequently and more easily bring cargo to orbit than larger rocket contracts allow.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":7,"featured_media":77881,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"_yoast_wpseo_meta-robots-noindex":"","_yoast_wpseo_meta-robots-nofollow":"","_yoast_wpseo_canonical":"","_acf":"","_yoast_wpseo_primary_category":36,"_jetpack_feature_clip_id":0,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false,"footnotes":"","_smg_distribution_targets":{"9":{"categories":["satellites","c2-comms","daily-brief","newsletters","home"],"primary_category":"satellites"}}},"categories":[160,163,36,19,23],"tags":[],"coauthors":[3041],"class_list":["post-60908","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-daily-news-roundup","category-military-space-report","category-newsletters","category-pentagon","category-space"],"acf":{"subheadline":"","legacy_arc_id":"2XRNC5N4KFDELD2RW7V5GGSVYE","arc_canonical_url":"\/newsletters\/2018\/07\/13\/what-should-darpa-send-to-space-they-want-your-suggestions\/","remove_feature_photo":false,"is_sponsored":false,"subtype":"","redirect_url":"","disable_inline_ads":false,"native_logo_pretext":"Presented By:"},"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO Premium plugin v26.0 (Yoast SEO v28.1) - https:\/\/yoast.com\/product\/yoast-seo-premium-wordpress\/ -->\n<title>What should DARPA send to space?
