Here&#039;s what the Trump administration will get.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The warhead design is a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/space\/2019\/01\/23\/work-completed-on-navys-upgraded-nuclear-warhead\/\" target=\"_blank\">modification of the W76-1 warhead<\/a> for the Navy\u2019s Trident ballistic missile, which has allowed NNSA to quickly turn around the design since it was ordered in last year\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/space\/2018\/02\/02\/the-us-could-be-getting-2-new-nuclear-capabilities-here-are-the-details\/\" target=\"_blank\">Nuclear Posture Review<\/a>. The warhead is designed to be smaller than the weapon <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/place\/Hiroshima-Japan\" target=\"_blank\">detonated at Hiroshima<\/a>, Japan, during World War II.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The system is controversial, however, with nonproliferation advocates and many <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/smr\/defense-news-conference\/2018\/09\/05\/cuts-to-nuclear-spending-and-oversight-of-socom-what-to-expect-from-a-democratic-hasc\/\" target=\"_blank\">Democrats in Congress<\/a> arguing that, by their nature, all nuclear weapons are strategic, not tactical. They note that even a low-yield nuclear weapon is incredibly powerful (an estimated 60,000-80,000 people were wiped out by the atomic bomb used at Hiroshima), and they worry having a low-yield and high-yield warhead launched on the same submarine-launched missile creates a situation where an adversary doesn\u2019t know which system is being used and therefore reacts as if the larger warhead has been launched.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As a result, the future of the weapon is in doubt, with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/congress\/2018\/11\/14\/smith-aims-to-scrap-trumps-nuclear-weapons-policy\/\" target=_blank>Rep.
