{"id":61511,"date":"2022-06-06T12:00:00","date_gmt":"2022-06-06T12:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2022\/06\/06\/fewer-devices-more-automation-and-a-better-interface-would-help-fight-alert-fatigue\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T00:37:25","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T00:37:25","slug":"fewer-devices-more-automation-and-a-better-interface-would-help-fight-alert-fatigue","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/smr\/sofic\/2022\/06\/06\/fewer-devices-more-automation-and-a-better-interface-would-help-fight-alert-fatigue\/","title":{"rendered":"Fewer devices, more automation and a better interface would help fight \u2018alert fatigue\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">TAMPA, Fla. \u2014 Special operations communicators <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2019\/04\/08\/soldiers-marines-try-out-new-device-that-puts-mixed-reality-multiple-functions-into-warfighters-hands\/\" target=\"_blank\">receive so much information<\/a> that they\u2019re beginning to experience what one expert calls \u201calert fatigue,\u201d putting them <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2020\/01\/14\/how-the-army-uses-tech-to-balance-awareness-with-battlefield-distractions\/\" target=\"_blank\">in danger of making fatal mistakes<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In response, U.S. Special Operations Command is asking industry for more <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/opinion\/2020\/11\/04\/how-to-protect-troops-from-an-assault-in-the-cognitive-domain\/\" target=\"_blank\">capabilities <\/a>that involve less gear and simpler user interfaces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cyber, computing and communications experts spoke May 19 at the Special Operations Forces Industry Conference in Florida, echoing concerns over the flood of information coming at special forces and calling for solutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In some ways, the \u201calert fatigue\u201d is a byproduct of technological development and mass data gathering techniques, said Mark Taylor, who serves as the command\u2019s chief technical officer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But there\u2019s a cost.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe cannot put these people in jeopardy of alert fatigue in which case they now get one of another 100 blips that might have been the one that tells them they need to hit this house and not that one,\u201d Taylor said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That means less gear, fewer processes, more automation and a simpler user interface, experts agreed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI think as technology grows, our communicators get more and more inundated with more technology,\u201d said Army Sgt. Maj. Ridge Shan\/Air Force)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But there\u2019s been progress, Coon noted: A capability once provided by a 78-pound radio system and carried by the AH-63 Apache helicopter is now available via a tactical hand-held device.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To ease the cognitive load, operators need a way to effectively use multiple waveforms and data systems. SOCOM\u2019s chief information officer, Joe Tragakis, said that\u2019s because there are too many machines to do a basic task.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He\u2019s currently looking for a way to allow an analyst to simultaneously search for data on both the classified and unclassified networks on a single machine, \u201cas opposed to the current practice of getting four, five or
