Gen. Wally Rugen said in a brief interview at an Army Futures Command event at Fort Myer in Arlington, Virginia, meant to showcase the command\u2019s progress in executing the Army\u2019s top six modernization priorities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Future Vertical List is the third priority, with Long-Range Precision Fires and Next-Generation Combat Vehicle pulling rank.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Army is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/digital-show-dailies\/ausa\/2018\/10\/10\/can-the-army-pull-off-buying-two-new-helicopters-back-to-back\/\" target=\"_blank\">embarking on an ambitious plan<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2018\/10\/03\/us-army-triggers-design-competition-for-future-attack-reconnaissance-helicopter\/\" target=\"_blank\">procure two major helicopters<\/a> back-to-back to replace UH-60 Black Hawks, AH-64 Apaches and to fill a gap left open when the service retired its OH-85 Kiowa Warriors in 2014.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/digital-show-dailies\/aaaa\/2019\/04\/07\/is-the-us-army-biting-off-more-than-it-can-chew-we-ask-its-future-vertical-lift-modernization-boss\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/6601843701_45df7e44b2_o.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Is the US Army biting off more than it can chew? Wally Rugen at the Association of the U.S. Army&#039;s Global Force Symposium to talk about progress his team is making on future vertical lift modernization efforts.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The service published a request for information in April this year to gauge industry on the realm of the possible including the acceleration of FLRAA\u2019s fielding schedule with a goal of delivering at least by fiscal year 2030.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Based on the AROC decision, industry feedback and the success of the science and technology program \u2014 the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2019\/03\/21\/sikorsky-boeing-defiant-helo-takes-first-flight\/\" target=\"_blank\"> Joint Multi-Role Technology Demonstrator (JMR-TD) <\/a>\u2014 Rugen said he foresees a good possibility of a \u201cmultiyear acceleration\u201d of the program.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/land\/2019\/05\/21\/bells-v-280-completes-low-speed-agility-tests\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"172\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/V-280-4.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Bell\u2019s V-280 completes low-speed agility tests<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Bell shows the V-280 Valor can conduct high-performance slow-speed maneuvers, meeting last of the key performance parameters set out by the U.S. Army in its Joint Multi-Role technology demonstration program.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rugen declined to offer more detail on how many years the schedule might shrink because the plan was still moving up the chain of command for final approval.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The FLRAA effort is a joint program and \u201cother services have joined us in concurring with our approach. We are seeing a greater body of support, not just within the Army,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The service is planning to hold another industry day in Huntsville, Alabama, on July 31 to discuss requirements and capabilities. We really want to understand from industry how can you make these advanced rotorcraft designs into a weapon system that we can fight,&#8221; Rugen
