{"id":61616,"date":"2022-08-19T01:08:34","date_gmt":"2022-08-19T01:08:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2022\/08\/19\/army-taps-aerovironments-jump-20-to-replace-shadow-uas\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T00:40:12","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T00:40:12","slug":"army-taps-aerovironments-jump-20-to-replace-shadow-uas","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/land\/2022\/08\/19\/army-taps-aerovironments-jump-20-to-replace-shadow-uas\/","title":{"rendered":"Army taps AeroVironment\u2019s Jump 20 to replace Shadow unmanned system"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WASHINGTON \u2014 The U.S. Army has chosen <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2020\/04\/09\/first-candidate-for-armys-future-tactical-unmanned-aircraft-gets-first-soldier-operated-flight\/\" target=\"_blank\">AeroVironment\u2019s Jump 20 unmanned aircraft system<\/a> to be the first<a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2021\/08\/16\/us-army-endorses-tactical-drone-contest-to-replace-shadow\/\" target=\"_blank\"> future tactical UAS<\/a> as part of an effort to replace the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2018\/07\/16\/replacing-shadow-unmanned-aircraft-could-be-quick-win-for-army\/\" target=\"_blank\">runway-dependent Shadow <\/a>drone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The $8 million contract announced Thursday will pay for one system, which includes six air vehicles, ground data terminals and ground control stations, according to the Army. The system will go to a single brigade combat team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBased upon the results of testing, Army leadership may decide to procure and field up to seven additional [Increment 1] systems,\u201d the service said in a statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This initial purchase is meant to inform requirements for a second program increment, which will rely on \u201ca separate competitive acquisition,\u201d the statement noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2018, the Army began considering requirements for a replacement for the Textron-made Shadow drone. This unmanned system is widely used, but is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/digital-show-dailies\/aaaa\/2018\/04\/25\/these-two-drones-are-leaders-in-accident-rates-how-is-the-us-army-responding\/\" target=\"_blank\">one of the most accident-prone <\/a>unmanned aerial systems in the service\u2019s inventory. The Shadow is also difficult to deploy and has a loud engine, which allows for easy detection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2019, the service narrowed the pool to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/digital-show-dailies\/global-force-symposium\/2019\/03\/28\/the-army-picks-2-drones-to-try-out-to-replace-shadow\/\" target=\"_blank\">two competitors:<\/a> Martin UAV and a team of Northrop Grumman and Textron\u2019s AAI. Martin UAV supplied its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/unmanned\/2018\/04\/20\/v-bat-drone-to-challenge-us-army-allies-in-germany-based-exercise\/\" target=\"_blank\">V-Bat system<\/a>, while the team offered Textron\u2019s Aerosonde HQ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Shortly after, the Army added two more aircraft for evaluation: Arcturus UAV\u2019s Jump 20 system and L3Harris Technologies\u2019 FVR-90.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For about a year, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2021\/03\/03\/us-armys-unmanned-aircraft-rodeo-firms-up-requirements-for-shadow-replacement\/\" target=\"_blank\">operational units evaluated the four different tactical <\/a>drones, culminating <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2021\/01\/29\/us-army-heads-into-future-tactical-unmanned-aircraft-rodeo-next-month\/\" target=\"_blank\">in a rodeo<\/a> in spring 2021 at Fort Benning, Georgia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Last year, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2021\/01\/15\/aerovironment-buys-arcturus-uav-405m-deal\/\" target=\"_blank\">AeroVironment acquired Arcturus<\/a> for $405 million.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAeroVironment met performance requirements while offering high technology and manufacturing readiness levels, thereby reducing the need for additional development,\u201d the service said in Thursday\u2019s statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">AeroVironment declined to comment for this story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Already, the Army is preparing for the second increment of the program. Nearly a year ago, it released a request for whitepapers for this next part of the competition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Martin UAV, which was acquired by Shield AI, said it plans to submit a new and improved V-Bat that was unavailable at the time of the previous soldier evaluation process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Volansi and Sierra Nevada Corp. also said earlier this year they plan to compete for the second increment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maj. Gen. Wally Rugen, who oversees the Army\u2019s future vertical lift modernization efforts, said at the 2021 rodeo he wants the service to get a revolutionary, not evolutionary, new tactical UAS capability that isn\u2019t tied to a runway, has a lower acoustic signature and has far lower equipment requirements to transport the system.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Army has
