Every single objective was met.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <a href=\"http:\/\/pib.nic.in\/newsite\/pmreleases.aspx?mincode=33\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\">Indian Ministry of Defence<\/a> said that \u201call the radars, electro-optical tracking stations and telemetry stations tracked the vehicle all through the course of the trajectory.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/training-sim\/2018\/02\/27\/pakistan-launches-naval-exercise-as-it-aims-to-counter-india-protect-economy\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"194\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/GettyImages-468792906.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Pakistan launches naval exercise as it aims to counter India, protect economy<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Pakistan\u2019s Navy has kicked off a major exercise as it tries to modernize and expand to counter growing Indian naval power, as well as protect its maritime economy and trade links.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Agni-5 is rumored to carry a multiple independently targetable re-entry vehicle, or MIRV, payload capable of carrying multiple nuclear warheads in one re-entry vehicle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thediplomat.com\/2017\/01\/why-pakistans-newly-flight-tested-multiple-nuclear-warhead-capable-missile-really-matters\/\">India is thought<\/a> to be pursuing MIRV technology to match <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/naval\/2018\/01\/05\/pakistan-test-fires-indigenous-anti-ship-missile\/\">advances being made by Pakistan<\/a> to ensure it has a survivable second-strike capability that can overcome Pakistani ballistic missile defense systems. It is unknown if the Agni-5\u2019s purported MIRV technology was deployed during this test.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">MIRV missiles are considered by some to be <a href=\"https:\/\/armscontrolcenter.org\/multiple-independently-targetable-reentry-vehicle-mirv\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">destabilizing<\/a> because they incentivize a nuclear first strike, which is one reason why the United States and Russia attempted to ban MIRVs in the abandoned START II Treaty. <\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/global\/asia-pacific\/2018\/05\/02\/pakistan-cosies-up-to-russia-but-moscow-doesnt-seem-to-want-to-take-sides\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/GettyImages-921206050.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Pakistan cosies up to Russia, but Moscow doesn\u2019t seem to want to take sides<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Pakistan and Russia have pledged to improve defense ties, but Moscow appears to be trying to balance its South Asia relations rather than abandon its traditional strategic partner India.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although a <a href=\"https:\/\/warontherocks.com\/2017\/03\/india-is-not-changing-its-policy-on-no-first-use-of-nuclear-weapons\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">key tenet of Indian nuclear doctrine<\/a> is a no-first-use policy \u2015 the promise not to use nuclear weapons in a conflict unless attacked by an adversary using nuclear weapons \u2015 the integration of MIRV missiles and <a href=\"http:\/\/carnegieendowment.org\/2016\/06\/30\/pakistan-s-tactical-nuclear-weapons-and-their-impact-on-stability-pub-63911\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">changes in Pakistani nuclear posture<\/a> is <a href=\"https:\/\/thediplomat.com\/2017\/05\/a-holistic-approach-to-indias-nuclear-doctrine\/\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\">signaling a possible change<\/a> in India\u2019s outlook.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In January 2017, Pakistan tested a possibly MIRV missile, <a href=\"https:\/\/missilethreat.csis.org\/missile\/ababeel\/#en-2841-11\">the Ababeel<\/a>, to the concern of nuclear analysts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt is hard to deny that India and Pakistan are in a full-blown arms race,\u201d Vipin Narang, an associate professor of political science at MIT and a member of MIT\u2019s Security Studies Program, said following the test.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2018\/04\/25\/russia-reportedly-makes-progress-on-s-400-air-defense-system-sale-to-india\/\">India\u2019s ongoing efforts to obtain<\/a> the Russian-made <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/global\/europe\/2018\/04\/04\/turkeys-erdogan-says-missile-deal-with-russia-is-final\/\">S-400 ballistic missile defense system<\/a> is also contributing to increasing uncertainty in the region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But India\u2019s latest test also had another audience in mind. Given the Agni-V\u2019s longer range, it has likely been designed to provide a <a href=\"https:\/\/thediplomat.com\/2018\/06\/india-test-fires-most-advanced-nuclear-capable-icbm\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">nuclear deterrent against China<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The missile will need to complete two more test firings before being declared
