{"id":61690,"date":"2021-02-23T03:13:26","date_gmt":"2021-02-23T03:13:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2021\/02\/23\/lcs-shipbuilder-fires-president-amid-a-us-and-australian-financial-investigations\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T00:36:03","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T00:36:03","slug":"lcs-shipbuilder-fires-president-amid-a-us-and-australian-financial-investigations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/naval\/2021\/02\/23\/lcs-shipbuilder-fires-president-amid-a-us-and-australian-financial-investigations\/","title":{"rendered":"LCS shipbuilder president resigns amid US and Australian financial investigations"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WASHINGTON \u2013 The head of Alabama shipbuilder <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/naval\/2018\/08\/05\/a-pair-of-austal-ships-ace-acceptance-trials\/\" target=_blank>Austal USA<\/a> has resigned amid investigations from U.S. and Australian authorities into a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/pentagon\/2016\/07\/05\/austal-takes-115-million-lcs-write-off\/\" target=_blank>$115 million loss the company posted<\/a> in 2016 that was tied to the builder\u2019s Independence-class littoral combat ship program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The company <a href=\"https:\/\/investor.austal.com\/static-files\/fd744143-202b-40b1-8b1d-23c4807ea06b\">announced in a press release<\/a> Monday that Austal USA President Craig Perciavalle has resigned and been replaced in the interim by Rusty Murdaugh, the company\u2019s chief financial officer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Austal USA is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Australian shipbuilder Austal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2016, the company posted a loss $120.9 million, down from a reported profit of $85.3 million the year before. At the time, the company attributed the loss to underestimating the costs associated with the littoral combat ship.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/naval\/2020\/12\/16\/the-us-navy-is-investigating-a-potential-lcs-class-wide-design-flaw\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/little_rock.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">US Navy investigates potential LCS class-wide design flaw<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The U.S. Navy is nearing a conclusion that it has a big problem on its hands.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In its Feb. 22 release, the company said it was under investigation by the Department of Justice, the Securities and Exchange Commission and the Australian Securities and Investments Commission. As part of its own investigation, Austal said it hired attorneys to look into the loss posted in 2016, claiming that it underestimated how much it would cost to meet the U.S. Navy\u2019s rigorous shock standards, among other requirements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Austal said its internal investigation found that because the company did not have a strong understanding of how much the ship would cost to construct, it overstated the value of the work (known as \u201cwork in progress\u201d for accounting purposes) on the LCS-6, the USS Jackson, according to the press release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Furthermore, U.S. officials are investigating valves installed on several ships that did not meet military specifications.
