{"id":61766,"date":"2021-11-19T17:28:23","date_gmt":"2021-11-19T17:28:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2021\/11\/19\/niger-becomes-first-foreign-customer-of-turkeys-hurkus-aircraft\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T00:38:54","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T00:38:54","slug":"niger-becomes-first-foreign-customer-of-turkeys-hurkus-aircraft","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/air\/2021\/11\/19\/niger-becomes-first-foreign-customer-of-turkeys-hurkus-aircraft\/","title":{"rendered":"Niger becomes first foreign customer of Turkey\u2019s Hurkus aircraft"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">MERSIN, Turkey \u2014 Niger has become the first foreign customer of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/training-sim\/2017\/11\/21\/turkey-chooses-jet-engine-variant-for-indigenous-trainer\/\" target=\"_blank\">Hurkus trainer aircraft<\/a>, produced by Turkish Aerospace Industries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Turkey\u2019s Directorate of Communications said Nov. 19 on its website that Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdo\u011fan spoke with his counterpart in Niger, Mohamed Bazoum, by phone about bilateral relations. \u201cPresident Erdo\u011fan stated that the TB2 drones, Hurkus aircraft, and armored vehicles that Niger would procure from Turkey would strengthen its military and security forces,\u201d according to the directorate\u2019s statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Temel Kotil, the head of TAI, first made mention of the Hurkus export during a TV interview on CNN T\u00fcrk on Nov. 11, but he did not name the customer. Kotil said at the time that the company signed a contract for export, with the first aircraft scheduled for delivery in six months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Officials have not disclosed the quantity and exact variant associated with the order. However, Kotil said in an April interview that the company was very close to exporting 12 Hurkus-C aircraft.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe sale of Hurkus marks Turkey\u2019s first military aircraft export that was designed and manufactured entirely with domestic resources,\u201d Kotil said during the Nov. 11 interview.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mehmet Cem Demirci, a Turkish political and security analyst, told Defense News that the export deal is important for Turkey because it shows the country can develop military aircraft that meet both national needs and foreign standards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cTurkey has been in the foreground in armed drone exports in the recent years, but now we\u2019re witnessing the sale of a manned aircraft. Furthermore, it is a competitive aircraft that was designed and engineered in Turkey,\u201d Demirci said. \u201cThe Erdo\u011fan administration seems to have prioritized African countries in its search for alternate markets. This is the second deal revealed following Erdo\u011fan\u2019s October visits to African states. Turkish Dearsan Shipyard has recently signed a contract with Nigeria to build two offshore patrol vessels.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The analyst expects the Turkish government or local defense companies will announce more <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2021\/01\/27\/kenya-orders-118-armored-vehicles-from-turkey\/\" target=\"_blank\">deals with African states<\/a> in the following months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Hurkus is a tandem two-seat, low-wing, single-engine turboprop aircraft that was designed as a new-generation trainer as well as a platform for performing light-attack and armed reconnaissance <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/training-sim\/2017\/06\/26\/turkey-plans-to-buy-up-to-36-armed-hurkus-trainers\/\" target=\"_blank\">combat missions<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Hurkus-C is an armed variant that can be used for close-air support missions. It is fitted with a forward-looking infrared sensor and has a maximum weapons load of 3,300 pounds. It\u2019s able to take off and land on unprepared runways. The main advantage of the Hurkus-C is that it reduces the cost of air power, particularly in low-intensity conflict theaters where anti-air warfare threats are
