{"id":62027,"date":"2018-10-10T16:16:15","date_gmt":"2018-10-10T16:16:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2018\/10\/10\/the-value-of-experience-for-futures-command\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T00:31:07","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T00:31:07","slug":"the-value-of-experience-for-futures-command","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/digital-show-dailies\/ausa-digital-show-dailies\/2018\/10\/10\/the-value-of-experience-for-futures-command\/","title":{"rendered":"Pentagon isn\u2019t going to micromanage Futures Command, says Shanahan"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WASHINGTON \u2014 The U.S. Army\u2019s Futures Command is supposed to be a center of future capabilities and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2018\/08\/28\/can-austin-make-the-army-weird\/\" target=_blank>new thinking<\/a>, but for that to flourish, a certain level of experienced leadership must remain in place, according to Deputy Secretary of Defense Patrick Shanahan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Speaking to reporters after a speech at the annual Association of the United States Army conference, Shanahan said he believes Futures Command is in good hands under Gen. Mike Murray, describing the role of the Office of the Secretary of Defense as supportive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019re not there to grade his paper. We\u2019re there to identify where there are risks and opportunities, then help him to go address them,\u201d Shanahan said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/digital-show-dailies\/ausa\/\" target=_blank><b>Click here for more coverage from the 2018 AUSA Conference!<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cPeople who are on the leadership team have to have experience. People like myself who\u2019ve been involved with these kind of programs for 30 years, it\u2019s not that we\u2019re smarter than anyone else in the department,\u201d Shanahan said. \u201cI have tens of thousands of hours of experience. I\u2019ve made every mistake that they\u2019re going to make.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Below Murray, however, the deputy pointed to a lack of programmatic expertise, as opposed to technical or acquisition expertise, as a potential area to target when looking to hire new talent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s not like we have the wrong folks. We need a few more of the right folks to complement,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Asked specifically about how the department was looking at Future Vertical Lift, one of the six key focuses for Futures Command, Shanahan touched again on the idea that \u201cexperience has a lot of value\u201d for such complex programs, pointing to the kind of individuals who are buried inside the department but have worked on multiple programs in the past.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThose are the people who have all the experience and the knowledge. And they really need to be sitting with these young colonels and brigadier generals and other acquisition people and helping them challenge their assumptions,\u201d Shanahan said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAs we build out Futures Command, that\u2019s the type of work that we\u2019re going to do because we\u2019re not going to do miracles.
