{"id":62247,"date":"2022-09-19T22:16:29","date_gmt":"2022-09-19T22:16:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2022\/09\/19\/air-force-says-kc-46-can-refuel-planes-around-the-world-except-one\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T00:42:15","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T00:42:15","slug":"air-force-says-kc-46-can-refuel-planes-around-the-world-except-one","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/air\/2022\/09\/19\/air-force-says-kc-46-can-refuel-planes-around-the-world-except-one\/","title":{"rendered":"Air Force says KC-46 can refuel planes around the world \u2014 except one"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">NATIONAL HARBOR, Md. \u2014 The Air Force on Monday said the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/news\/your-air-force\/2022\/09\/16\/kc-46-tankers-refuel-jets-tasked-with-combat-ops-for-the-first-time\/\" target=\"_blank\">KC-46A Pegasus refueling tanker<\/a> is now cleared to carry out all refueling missions around the world on all aircraft \u2014 with one exception.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a roundtable with reporters at the Air Force Association\u2019s Air Space Cyber conference here, Air Mobility Command head Gen. Mike Minihan said he signed off on Friday on the final Interim Capability Release, opening up the Air Force\u2019s 60 KC-46s to worldwide deployments. Minihan said that includes the B-2 and U.S. Strategic Command missions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, AMC clarified later the KC-46 still cannot refuel the A-10 Warthog due to a problem with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/smr\/air-force-priorities\/2021\/02\/24\/despite-growing-pains-the-kc-46-will-begin-limited-operations-soon\/\" target=\"_blank\">stiffness of its refueling boom<\/a> and won\u2019t be able to until the issue is fixed. The Air Force in 2019 awarded Boeing a contract worth up to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/air\/2019\/08\/06\/heres-why-boeing-is-getting-555m-to-fix-a-problem-with-the-air-forces-new-tanker\/\" target=\"_blank\">$55.5 million to redesign the boom<\/a>; that effort is still in the works.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The rollout of the Boeing-made tanker has had multiple bumps \u2014 such as a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/industry\/techwatch\/2022\/04\/19\/us-air-force-boeing-lock-down-design-for-kc-46-vision-system-upgrade\/\" target=\"_blank\">troubled Remote Vision System<\/a> for controlling its boom that required a redesign, which itself was delayed several months. But on Monday, Minihan stood behind the Pegasus and said it has \u201cenormous capability.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI have 100% confidence in [the Pegasus\u2019] ability,\u201d Minihan said. \u201cThe people that fly, fix and support it, love it. The people that refuel off it, love it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But more work remains, Minihan said, and AMC is now going to concentrate on putting into place the necessary fixes for the Pegasus. Until then, he said, there are still some limitations and workarounds crews must take into account.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example, the original vision system\u2019s picture can be distorted or difficult to see under certain lighting conditions or angles. This can sometimes put the tanker in danger of scraping the receiving aircraft with the boom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And there are still some challenges that crews are having to work around, Minihan said, such as the ongoing vision problems with the original RVS. Minihan said that if the Pegasus\u2019 crew is having trouble seeing through the RVS, for example, the air crew will position the plane differently so the angles or lighting conditions aren\u2019t as problematic. He said the upgraded version of RVS, dubbed RVS 2.0, will fix this problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A comment from Boeing on AMC\u2019s announcement was not immediately available.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The announcement of the Pegasus\u2019 final Interim Capability Release follows the tanker\u2019s recent first refueling mission during real-world operations, which took place in the Middle East area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On Aug. 29, three KC-46s in the region for a training exercise at Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar refueled two F-15E Strike Eagle fighters with the 335th Expeditionary Fighter Squadron carrying out U.S. Central Command missions. A fourth Pegasus also there for a training exercise remained on standby.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Air Force said in the release this mission marked the first time the KC-46\u2032s Military Data Network communications system was successfully used in combat. This onboard system lets the Pegasus act as a secure node connecting an air operations center on the ground with other aircraft flying nearby, increasing awareness of what is happening on the battlefield.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe KC-46 now officially joins the rest of the Air Force\u2019s refueling fleet in meeting combatant command requirements around the world,\u201d Brig. Gen. Ryan Samuelson, the head of AMC\u2019s KC-46 cross functional team, said in the release. \u201cBut the KC-46A is a game changer in its ability to transmit and exchange data between networks, arming warfighters with real-time battlefield awareness [and] extending the joint force\u2019s reach, flexibility and endurance capabilities.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Minihan also praised the KC-46\u2032s connectivity and ability to expand airmen\u2019s picture of the battlefield alongside its refueling capabilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s not only giving situational awareness via the net, it\u2019s also extending lethality via its refueling,\u201d Minihan said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cI have 100% confidence in [the Pegasus\u2019] ability,\u201d AMC head Gen.
