The U.S. Air Force is executing military-related construction projects across Europe as part of the European Deterrence Initiative.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n

WASHINGTON \u2014 Due to poor planning and a lack of centralized management, it will take more time than originally expected for the U.S. Air Force to procure \u201cbase in a box\u201d kits<\/a> and forward deploy them in Europe<\/a>, the Defense Department\u2019s inspector general found in an investigation<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Air Force began buying Deployable Air Base System\u2014Facilities, Equipment, and Vehicles Kits \u2014 known more simply as DABS kits \u2014 in fiscal 2016 as it sought to push back on Russian influence in Europe<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The idea was that the service could invest in packages of vehicles, temporary housing equipment, airfield construction materials and other supplies, place them around Europe at bases owned by U.S. allies and partners, and then stand up air operations if needed during a contingency<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\t
