{"id":63725,"date":"2023-05-17T17:19:52","date_gmt":"2023-05-17T17:19:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2023\/05\/17\/romanian-lawmakers-vote-to-approve-11-billion-abrams-acquisition\/"},"modified":"2026-08-20T12:30:27","modified_gmt":"2026-08-20T12:30:27","slug":"romanian-lawmakers-vote-to-approve-11-billion-abrams-acquisition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/global\/europe\/2023\/05\/17\/romanian-lawmakers-vote-to-approve-11-billion-abrams-acquisition\/","title":{"rendered":"Romanian lawmakers vote to approve $1.1 billion Abrams acquisition"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WARSAW, Poland \u2014 The Commission for Defense, Public Order and National Security in Romania\u2019s Chamber of Deputies, the parliament\u2019s lower chamber, has approved the National Defence Ministry\u2019s request to allow the purchase of 54 used M1A2 Abrams SEPv3 tanks from the United States.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The envisioned purchase of 54 tanks along with accompanying gear and services is estimated to be worth about 1 billion euros ($1.1 billion), according to official documents obtained by local news site DefenseRomania.ro.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As Romania\u2019s ruling tripartite coalition holds a large majority in both chambers, a relevant bill to authorize the acquisition is expected to be adopted by the parliament shortly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Manufactured by General Dynamics Land Systems, the Abrams are to enable Romania\u2019s land forces to replace some of their outdated Soviet-times tanks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The development comes as the Romanian government is accelerating work on a number of procurements, including plans to buy new armored vehicles, missile systems, warships, 155-mm howitzers and the F-35 Lightning II fighter jet in the aftermath of Russia\u2019s attack against Ukraine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Owing to the planned purchase, Romania could become the second operator of the U.S.-made tank in Eastern Europe after the Polish government <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/global\/europe\/2022\/04\/05\/poland-signs-475-billion-abrams-tank-deal-as-russias-war-speeds-procurements\/\">signed a deal<\/a> worth some $4.75 billion to acquire 250 M1A2 Abrams SEPv3 tanks in April 2022. Last January, Poland\u2019s Ministry of National Defence placed a second order, valued at about $1.4 billion, to buy 116 used M1A1 Abrams from the United
