CQ Brown said Tuesday the Air Force would likely <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/air\/2022\/12\/07\/congress-approves-a-10-retirements-more-f-35s-in-defense-bill\/\" target=\"_blank\">retire all its A-10 Warthogs<\/a> over the next five or six years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Until recently, the Air Force and Congress have disagreed over what to do with the famed and rugged attack airplane. While the A-10 was known and beloved for its close air support role in Iraq and Afghanistan over the last two decades, the Air Force says the low-and-slow-flying plane would not be able to survive in a fight against a nation with modern air defenses, like China.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Air Force has repeatedly sought congressional permission to start retiring the A-10 and instead use those resources to bring on newer jets, but was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/air\/2021\/12\/07\/house-ndaa-would-put-brakes-on-a-10-aircraft-retirement-but-let-others-go\/\" target=\"_blank\">rebuffed by Congress each time<\/a> until the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/air\/2022\/06\/16\/a-10-retirements-more-air-force-f-35s-in-senate-defense-policy-bill\/\" target=\"_blank\">fiscal 2023 budget<\/a> was approved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Air Force this year will start <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/air\/2022\/03\/28\/air-force-would-cut-150-aircraft-including-a-10s-buy-fewer-f-35s-in-2023-budget\/\" target=\"_blank\">retiring its first 21 A-10s<\/a> Brown told reporters at the Air and Space Forces Association\u2019s AFA Warfare Symposium here. This will reduce the service\u2019s A-10 inventory from 281 to 260.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Those Warthogs will come from an Air National Guard squadron at Fort Wayne, Indiana, which will then transition to an equal number of F-16s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And in subsequent years, Brown said, the Air Force hopes to continue that momentum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI would say over the next five or six years, we will probably [have] the A-10 out of our inventory,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In future wars, Brown continued, the Air Force needs aircraft that can fill multiple roles, and the A-10\u2032s utility is too limited.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Combatant commands have not been asking for A-10s, Brown said, and he has a hard time getting them to use them because it\u2019s \u201ca single-mission airplane.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe A-10 is a great airplane \u2026 in an uncontested environment,\u201d Brown said. \u201cThe challenge is, we\u2019re going to be in more contested environments in the future.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fighters such as the F-35 and bombers are able to carry out close air support missions, Brown said, but in a future, highly contested combat environment, the Air Force will likely play less of a close air support role than it did in the Middle East.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019ve got to lean towards where the threat is,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cThe A-10 is a great airplane \u2026 in an uncontested environment,\u201d Air Force Chief of Staff Gen.
