{"id":64263,"date":"2023-04-26T19:21:14","date_gmt":"2023-04-26T19:21:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2023\/04\/26\/army-evaluating-future-of-heavy-lift-helicopters\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T00:42:41","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T00:42:41","slug":"army-evaluating-future-of-heavy-lift-helicopters","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/digital-show-dailies\/aaaa\/2023\/04\/26\/army-evaluating-future-of-heavy-lift-helicopters\/","title":{"rendered":"Army evaluating future of heavy-lift helicopters"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">NASHVILLE, Tenn. \u2014 The U.S. Army has embarked on a study to consider a future heavy vertical lift aircraft, the director of Army Future Vertical Lift modernization told Defense News.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The service is years into developing and procuring other Future Vertical Lift aircraft, but is just starting to consider what it might want for the aircraft that would succeed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2021\/10\/10\/army-awards-boeing-chinook-contract-despite-lingering-technical-issues\/\" target=\"_blank\">the CH-47 Chinook cargo helicopter<\/a>. Indeed, the Army recently selected Textron\u2019s Bell to build its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/industry\/2022\/12\/05\/us-army-makes-largest-helicopter-award-in-40-years\/\" target=\"_blank\">Future Long Range Assault Aircraft<\/a> and is conducting a competitive prototyping competition for a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/industry\/techwatch\/2023\/04\/24\/us-army-preps-mission-tech-for-future-helicopter-despite-engine-delay\/\" target=\"_blank\">Future Reconnaissance Aircraft, or FARA<\/a>. Both are expected to come online in the early 2030s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When the Army began preparing over a decade ago for a family of FVL aircraft, it wanted an aircraft that could be somewhat scalable from light to heavy. The service opted to prioritize a medium-lift aircraft.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the Army is now weighing its the heavy piece, even though the Chinook is slated to continue flying through the mid-2060s, or 100 years of service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The service has initiated a study that it hopes to complete later this summer, Maj. Gen. Wally Rugen, the Future Vertical Lift Cross-Functional Team lead, said. The Army has hired a company to conduct the study, according to an Army spokesman.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rugen said the study should determine how the Army will pursue the capability and deliver a potential timeline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The spokesman noted the study will also consider how the Army could use its existing technology or capability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Army has been moving to address issues with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/digital-show-dailies\/aaaa\/2016\/04\/29\/army-aviation-has-a-weight-problem\/#:~:text=Because%20fuel%20tanks%20are%20now%20self-healing%2C%20the%20Chinook,reduce%20the%20aircraft%20weight%20by%20about%20100%20pounds.\" target=\"_blank\">Chinook\u2019s weight<\/a>, upgrading the aircraft to give it more lift capability, including a new fuel system, electrical system and a stronger airframe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, the service has made it clear it<a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2020\/11\/12\/congress-poised-to-bolster-cargo-helo-program-as-army-holds-steady-on-decision-to-scale-back\/\" target=\"_blank\"> does not want to buy the latest variant<\/a>, the CH-47F Block II Chinook, for the active force so it can instead fund its FVL fleet. The Army has only fielded the variant in the form of the MH-47 G-model to U.S. Army Special Operations.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The US Army is taking a look at possible
