{"id":64409,"date":"2023-01-27T22:40:36","date_gmt":"2023-01-27T22:40:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2023\/01\/27\/us-army-selects-four-companies-to-build-new-tactical-truck-prototypes\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T00:49:32","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T00:49:32","slug":"us-army-selects-four-companies-to-build-new-tactical-truck-prototypes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/land\/2023\/01\/27\/us-army-selects-four-companies-to-build-new-tactical-truck-prototypes\/","title":{"rendered":"US Army selects four companies to build new tactical truck prototypes"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WASHINGTON \u2014 Mack Defense, Navistar Defense, Oshkosh Defense, and a team made up of American Rheinmetall Vehicles and GM Defense will build prototypes for a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/digital-show-dailies\/ausa\/2022\/10\/19\/army-readies-to-select-tactical-truck-builders\/\" target=\"_blank\">Common Tactical Truck<\/a> after the U.S. Army awarded them deals worth a cumulative $24.3 million.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Each team will build three prototypes of each CTT variant \u2014 an M915 line haul tractor; an M1088 medium tractor; a palletized load system; and a heavy expanded mobility tactical truck. Vendors will also provide digital designs to go with each variant and a design study for a wrecker, according to the Army.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The prototyping effort is meant to \u201callow the Army to evaluate current commercial technology in a military-type application, modified off the shelf for military purposes,\u201d Brig. Gen. Luke Peterson, the Army\u2019s program executive officer in charge of combat support and combat service support, told Defense News last fall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe are going to really learn what industry can offer us, and affordability is going to be the key driver here for the Army to make those informed decisions,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the Army\u2019s award announcement Friday, Peterson said the \u201cCTT effort brings an increased level of standardization to the Army\u2019s Tactical Truck fleet.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis effort is reminiscent of the original Liberty Truck, a heavy-duty truck produced by the United States Army during World War I,\u201d he explained. \u201cIt was the first official standardized motor vehicle adopted and produced by the U.S. military.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe CTT program can be viewed as the Liberty Truck of the 21st century, as it will similarly seek to streamline the Army\u2019s supply, maintenance, and training requirements.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"493\" height=\"274\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/CTT-2-artist-rendering-002.jpg.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-117523\" srcset=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/CTT-2-artist-rendering-002.jpg.jpg 493w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/CTT-2-artist-rendering-002.jpg.jpg?resize=300,167 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 493px) 100vw, 493px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">An artist&#8217;s rendering of a U.S. Army Common Tactical Truck concept. (Courtesy of the U.S. Army)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The service in June 2022 released a request for proposals to build prototypes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Army will begin evaluating the initial prototypes at the start of 2024, according to Friday\u2019s statement. The evaluation results will feed a capabilities development document that will be submitted to the Army Requirements Oversight Council. The council is to make a decision in fiscal 2026 on whether to move forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If the Army greenlights the requirements, the plan is to then again open the competition, allowing vendors to submit bids for the engineering and manufacturing development phase, the statement added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Initial production could total about 5,700 vehicles valued at about $5 billion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">American Rheinmetall Vehicles and GM Defense <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2022\/08\/17\/rheinmetall-gm-defense-partner-in-armys-tactical-truck-competition\/\" target=\"_blank\">partnered over the summer of 2022<\/a> to compete to build a prototype for the Army. They showcased a Rheinmetall MAN Military Vehicles HX tactical military truck at GM Defense\u2019s booth at the Association of the U.S. Army\u2019s annual exhibition in Washington last fall. The truck was hauling one of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2020\/10\/27\/us-army-gets-first-infantry-squad-vehicle-from-gm-defense\/\" target=\"_blank\">Infantry Squad Vehicles<\/a> that GM Defense is building for the Army.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mack Defense\u2019s chief executive, Dave Hartzell, told Defense News last year it was basing its prototype design and technology<b> <\/b>on its Granite family of vehicles \u2014 and militarizing it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As for Navistar Defense, CEO Ted Wright said in a statement that the company is able to balance the Army\u2019s \u201cforce protection, survivability, and mission readiness requirements while leveraging the commercial industry\u2019s rapidly advancing technological capabilities.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOur superior platforms are scalable to meet the vast majority of the Army\u2019s Tactical Wheeled Vehicles vehicle applications and mission roles for their medium and heavy fleets,\u201d the executive added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Oshkosh said it would take its \u201cbattle-tested\u201d family of heavy tactical vehicles, or FHTV, it already provides to the Army and apply it to the development of CTT prototypes, \u201cultimately providing a modernized version of the already capable FHTV. The FHTV\u2019s flexible architecture allows it to support a multitude of missions with the ability to scale up or down with minimal change to the vehicle.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">AM General, which did not receive a contract to build prototypes, announced its bid at the AUSA conference. The company teamed with Italian business Iveco Defence Vehicles, which is partnered with BAE Systems to supply the U.S. Marine Corps\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2020\/12\/10\/marine-corps-amphibious-combat-vehicle-reaches-full-rate-production\/\" target=\"_blank\">Amphibious Combat Vehicle.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe team\u2019s High Mobility Range Vehicle architecture for [the Common Tactical Truck] will be based on a newly launched highly modular range of trucks,
