{"id":64735,"date":"2023-07-19T14:53:35","date_gmt":"2023-07-19T14:53:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2023\/07\/19\/french-navy-receives-first-new-supply-ship-under-program-with-italy\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T00:56:05","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T00:56:05","slug":"french-navy-receives-first-new-supply-ship-under-program-with-italy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/global\/europe\/2023\/07\/19\/french-navy-receives-first-new-supply-ship-under-program-with-italy\/","title":{"rendered":"French Navy receives first new supply ship under program with Italy"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">STUTTGART, Germany \u2014 The French Navy has taken delivery of the LSS Jacques Chevallier, the first of a new class of supply ships meant to replace the service\u2019s aging fleet tankers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Chevallier \u2013 named for the French engineer who pioneered the nation\u2019s naval nuclear propulsion development and served as chief of the French military procurement office D\u00e9l\u00e9gation G\u00e9n\u00e9rale de l\u2019Armement (DGA) in the late 1980s \u2013 has undergone sea trials at the Toulon naval base in southern France since March. It\u2019s the first of four new logistics vessels that will take over for the navy\u2019s Durance-class of tankers, which were built between 1973-1990.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The formal delivery ceremony took place July 18 at Toulon in the presence of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/global\/europe\/2022\/10\/16\/french-navy-chief-talks-battle-readiness-and-global-reach\/\">senior French<\/a> and Italian defense ministry officials as well as representatives from Naval Group, Chantiers de l\u2019Atlantique and the international Organisation for Joint Armament Co-operation (OCCAR), which manages the program on behalf of France and Italy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Next, the Chevallier will undergo operational evaluations by the Navy. The ship is expected to enter service in 2024, according to France\u2019s Armed Forces Ministry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The new ships \u2013 known in French as \u201cb\u00e2timents ravitailleurs de forces\u201d (BRF) \u2013 were built with greater cargo and fuel-carrying capacity than their predecessors in the French Navy\u2019s Durance-class of fleet tankers. They are being developed under the \u201cflotte logistique\u201d (FLOTLOG) program, led by the DGA and supported by the Italian Navy\u2019s counterpart, the \u201cDirezione degli armament navali\u201d (NAVARM).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">France took the design of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/industry\/2022\/12\/27\/fincantieri-ceo-talks-us-frigates-vision-for-europes-naval-sector\/\">Fincantieri-developed<\/a> LSS Vulcano, delivered to the Italian Navy in March 2021, and made modifications to allow for its own tankers to support the carrier battle group of the Charles de Gaulle aircraft carrier, the French Armed Forces Ministry said in a July 18 press release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Development of the Chevallier began in 2019 at Chantiers de l\u2019Atlantique\u2019s shipyards in Saint-Nazaire, on France\u2019s west coast. Final assembly for the second LSS, dubbed Jacques Stosskopf, will begin in early 2024, with a planned 2025 delivery date, per Naval Group. The third and fourth ships in the Chevallier class will be named Emile Bertin and Gustave Z\u00e9d\u00e9, per the French defense ministry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Chantiers de l\u2019Atlantique is lead for the design and construction of the Jacques Chevallier-class ships, and is responsible for the integration and assembly of embedded systems. Meanwhile, Naval Group is contracted to design, develop, integrate and maintain the ships\u2019 military systems, including the combat system, aircraft landing components and ammunition loading capabilities, the company said in a July 19 statement<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Italy\u2019s Fincantieri manufactures the hull sections that house the refueling system, at the company\u2019s Castellammare di Stabia shipyard near Naples.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The French LSS class will measure 194 meters long (over 636 feet), and be capable of transporting 3.4 million gallons of fuel, with a displacement weight of 31,000 tonnes (68.3 million pounds) at full load. It will be equipped with the 40mm RAPIDFire artillery system developed by Thales and KNDS, as well as MBDA\u2019s Simbad RC short-range air defense
