{"id":64844,"date":"2023-07-17T19:54:15","date_gmt":"2023-07-17T19:54:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2023\/07\/17\/plasan-to-supply-armored-cab-for-am-generals-jltv\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T00:53:56","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T00:53:56","slug":"plasan-to-supply-armored-cab-for-am-generals-jltv","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/industry\/2023\/07\/17\/plasan-to-supply-armored-cab-for-am-generals-jltv\/","title":{"rendered":"Plasan to supply armored cab for AM General\u2019s JLTV"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WASHINGTON \u2014 The new supplier of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/industry\/2023\/02\/10\/am-general-unseats-oshkosh-to-build-joint-light-tactical-vehicle\/\" target=\"_blank\">Joint Light Tactical Vehicle, AM General<\/a>, has picked Plasan North America to provide major components of the armored cab in a $300 million deal, the latter announced July 17.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">AM General unseated JLTV-maker Oshkosh Defense in the U.S. Army\u2019s competition to build more of the vehicles, winning a contract valued at $8.66 billion in February. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2023\/03\/07\/oshkosh-files-protest-over-armys-light-tactical-vehicle-award\/\" target=\"_blank\">Oshkosh protested the decision<\/a> with the Government Accountability Office, but the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/industry\/2023\/06\/12\/auditors-reject-oshkosh-protest-of-9-billion-jltv-contract-loss\/\" target=\"_blank\"> watchdog rejected that protest in June<\/a>, allowing AM General to set up production lines and make arrangements with subcontractors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">AM General\u2019s contract covers five base years plus five one-year optional ordering periods to provide 20,682 JLTVs and 9,833 trailers for the U.S. military and foreign customers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Israeli company Plasan\u2019s U.S.-based branch was already supplying smaller subcomponents for the cab to Oshkosh when the latter was under contract to build the first JLTVs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt will be five times the amount of work that we were doing for the incumbent,\u201d Plasan North America\u2019s president, John Cavedo, said of the new contract with AM General. Cavedo led the JLTV joint program office as an Army colonel from 2012 to 2015.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With roughly 85 employees now, the company plans to hire another 170 over the next 18 months; the majority of those will be direct labor employees, Cavedo told Defense News.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Plasan North America took some risk in recent years \u2014 such as building a factory floor far ahead of time \u2014 in anticipation of winning a significant order that would allow the company to plant its roots more solidly in the United States, Cavedo explained. Because of those risks, the company won\u2019t have to do much physical expansion of the manufacturing space at its headquarters in Walker, Michigan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou can\u2019t capture a larger opportunity if you don\u2019t have the experience and the expertise in your workforce. You can\u2019t really capture those larger opportunities if you\u2019re going to have [to] expand and get new buildings and new facilities in order to meet the timelines, in order to meet the lead time and what the customer demands,\u201d Cavedo said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Plasan already has 200,000 square feet of manufacturing space, much of which is unoccupied and was underused over the last several years, according to Cavedo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe last couple of years were extremely lean years,\u201d he said. Now Plasan is \u201cpoised to ramp up very quickly because we don\u2019t have to go lease new space, and we have a key cadre of people already in place.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Additionally, the company has been investing in research and development projects, with the main effort its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2022\/04\/12\/power-struggle-how-the-us-army-is-tackling-the-logistics-of-battlefield-electricity\/\" target=\"_blank\">All-Terrain Electric Mission Module<\/a>. ATeMM is a single platform that solves a variety of power capability and logistics issues. The technology looks like a trailer, but instead of sucking power from the vehicle towing it, the module provides power, essentially converting the attached vehicle into a hybrid one. The system can also supplement generator power at command posts and act as a mass mobile charging station for conformal wearable batteries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Plasan continues to demonstrate the capability in the hopes it will turn into a program of record.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cLike everything in business, you\u2019re trying to balance your costs and your revenue,\u201d Cavedo said. \u201cATeMM was a significant cost in a company that was already operating on the thinnest of margins.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The AM General deal is \u201ca sigh of relief\u201d for the ATeMM effort, he added. \u201cIt\u2019s taking <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/congress\/budget\/2023\/06\/15\/us-army-must-plan-how-to-manage-electric-battlefield-lawmakers-say\/\" target=\"_blank\">the government several more months or several more years<\/a> to understand the totality of their need for battlefield circulation of electricity. I\u2019m able to keep the lights on the ATeMM program longer now.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To begin supplying armored cab components to AM General, Plasan will begin some initial components manufacturing to reach a testing phase expected by the end of the year. The company will then accelerate component production throughout 2024 so that, by the beginning of 2025, Plasan is able to meet AM General\u2019s full-rate production quantity requirements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">JLTVs will be built in a military production facility at AM General\u2019s 96-acre Mishawaka Manufacturing Campus in Indiana.
