{"id":64861,"date":"2023-08-24T21:09:45","date_gmt":"2023-08-24T21:09:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2023\/08\/24\/us-navy-awards-sikorsky-27-billion-for-35-ch-53k-helicopters\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T00:59:18","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T00:59:18","slug":"us-navy-awards-sikorsky-27-billion-for-35-ch-53k-helicopters","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/air\/2023\/08\/24\/us-navy-awards-sikorsky-27-billion-for-35-ch-53k-helicopters\/","title":{"rendered":"US Navy awards Sikorsky $2.7 billion for 35 CH-53K helicopters"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WASHINGTON \u2014 The U.S. Navy awarded its largest contract yet for the CH-53K King Stallion heavy-lift helicopter program, with a $2.77 billion contract Thursday for 35 aircraft.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The contract with Sikorsky, a Lockheed Martin subsidiary, covers 12 lot 7 and 15 lot 8 aircraft for the U.S. Marine Corps, as well as eight aircraft for the Israeli Air Force.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis contract award for 35 CH-53K helicopters stabilizes Sikorsky\u2019s nationwide supply base, creates additional production efficiencies, and provides the U.S. Marine Corps with transformative 21st century technologies,\u201d Sikorsky President Paul Lemmo said in a news release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Deliveries will begin in 2026, according to the release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Israel previously purchased four aircraft in 2022 under a Foreign Military Sales agreement. The helicopter will support the Israeli Air Force\u2019s special operations program, among other missions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Israel signed on to buy the 12 aircraft now on contract, and has an option to buy six more. (Courtesy of Sikorsky)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For the Corps, the lot 7 and lot 8 contracts \u2014 using fiscal 2023 and fiscal 2024 money, respectively \u2014 are the first two full-rate production contracts. The Navy declared the program was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/naval\/2022\/12\/27\/navy-declares-full-rate-production-for-marines-ch-53k-heavy-lift-helo\/\">ready for full-rate production in December<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Production at Sikorsky\u2019s Connecticut facility will quickly ramp up, as the first six contracts cumulatively covered 42 aircraft. With full-rate production declared, the Corps is expected to buy 21 per year starting in FY25, budget documents show.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bill Falk, Sikorsky\u2019s CH-53K program manager, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/naval\/2023\/04\/05\/heavy-lift-helo-program-prepping-for-2025-first-deployment\/\">told reporters in April<\/a> that the company had \u201cdramatically changed our production line in Connecticut as we ramp towards full-rate production.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The plant now has two parallel production lines, allowing for the company to churn out two helicopters a month.
