According to an Aug. 4 company statement, \u201cseveral systems are under contract \u2026 inside and outside NATO.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Belz declined to name the customers, noting that a key selling point of the product is the fact that nations aim to surprise would-be adversaries with the covert capability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Unlike active radar, which emits radio waves and processes their echoes to determine an aircraft\u2019s location, altitude and velocity, a passive system operates \u201cquietly\u201d \u2013 it does not broadcast any signals. Instead, Twinvis relies on airwaves coming from civilian digital television and FM radio stations that are reflected by the targets, <a href=\"https:\/\/nam04.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fdam.hensoldt.net%2Fm%2F51e84e07b501246e%2Foriginal%2FTwInvis-Passive-Radar-Datasheet-English.pdf&#038;data=05%7C01%7Cssprenger%40defensenews.com%7C3a85e8bf771f4477967e08db98ed6f64%7C1d5c96e57ee2446dbed8d0f8c50edea5%7C1%7C1%7C638271917785916022%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000%7C%7C%7C&#038;sdata=D4dMN5WHNUdf6mhugIp30g1rGoW70B1db5HQ6J3fOHk%3D&#038;reserved=0\">according to the company<\/a>. As a result, pilots are unaware that they are being tracked, and the passive sensors are much more difficult to detect and target.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The system achieved notoriety through Hensoldt\u2019s claim that it had been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/intel-geoint\/sensors\/2019\/09\/30\/stealthy-no-more-a-german-radar-vendor-says-it-tracked-the-f-35-jet-in-2018-from-a-pony-farm\/\">used to track the stealthy American F-35<\/a> as it departed from the ILA air show in Berlin in 2018. Lockheed Martin, the aircraft\u2019s manufacturer, stated that those F-35s had been fitted with radar reflectors and were flying with transponders on, making them easy to track. Nonetheless, experts say that passive radar, which picks up airwave disturbances caused by the airframe, may be a game changer in the cat-and-mouse game between stealth and detection technologies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe performance is so good both in terms of area covered and resolution that we are an option also for civilian airspace control,\u201d Hensoldt spokesperson Belz told Defense News.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In late 2018, Hensoldt and the German Air Force demoed the passive radar system\u2019s capabilities by using it to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/global\/europe\/2018\/10\/31\/german-air-force-to-test-covert-radar-in-large-scale-demo-over-bavaria\/\">surveil the entire southern German airspace<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The German military has shown keen interest in the emerging technology, even creating a formal acquisition track for passive sensing technology following the demonstration, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/global\/europe\/2019\/03\/22\/german-air-force-jumping-on-passive-radar\/\">Defense News previously reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the military realm, Belz said Hensoldt sees the system in the role of \u201cgap-filler\u201d for situations in which active radars cannot be used for technical or tactical reasons. It may also be used to prime active radars, reducing the amount of time they need to be turned on, which makes them a target.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Twinvis had previously only been available for integration in existing IRIS-T surface-launched missile systems, Belz said. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.diehl.com\/defence\/en\/press-and-media\/news\/diehl-defence-to-complement-iris-t-slm-by-passive-radar-capabilities-from-hensoldt\/\">According to the launcher\u2019s manufacturer Diehl<\/a>, this allowed for \u201comnidirectional 3D tracking of more than 180 objects up to a range of 250 km.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hensoldt expects a total volume of more than 100 orders, said Belz. A new production line at the company\u2019s facility in Ulm is meant to fill orders on short notice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Passive radar technology was first used by the German military in WWII \u2013 receivers at the Atlantic coast picked up on reflections of British radar signals. It was the emergence of better computer technology, however, that allowed for significant improvements in data quality, leading to the launch of Lockheed Martin\u2019s commercial Silent Sentry system at the turn of the millennium.
