{"id":65182,"date":"2023-04-11T19:10:57","date_gmt":"2023-04-11T19:10:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2023\/04\/11\/us-army-official-reveals-watercraft-networks-as-logistics-focus-areas\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T00:52:21","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T00:52:21","slug":"us-army-official-reveals-watercraft-networks-as-logistics-focus-areas","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/land\/2023\/04\/11\/us-army-official-reveals-watercraft-networks-as-logistics-focus-areas\/","title":{"rendered":"US Army official reveals watercraft, networks as logistics focus areas"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WASHINGTON \u2014 The U.S. Army will focus on developing watercraft, power-generation capabilities and a more effective command-and-control network as part of its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2023\/03\/29\/us-army-forms-new-modernization-team-to-tackle-contested-logistics\/\" target=\"_blank\">newly formed modernization team <\/a>meant to ease the movement of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2023\/03\/29\/us-army-has-a-gigantic-problem-with-logistics-in-the-indo-pacific\/\" target=\"_blank\">equipment, weapons and people<\/a> in challenging environments, according to the service\u2019s undersecretary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While he wouldn\u2019t go into detail about who will lead the new cross-functional team focused on contested logistics, Gabe Camarillo told reporters at an Association of the U.S. Army breakfast on Tuesday that it would prioritize modernization in key areas needed to operate in the Indo-Pacific region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou\u2019re thinking about everything from intra-theater lift requirements and everything we\u2019re doing on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/digital-show-dailies\/ausa\/2022\/10\/13\/us-army-seeks-new-watercraft-to-beef-up-indo-pacific-capability\/\" target=\"_blank\">watercraft<\/a> to our ability to provide refueling, water, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2022\/04\/12\/power-struggle-how-the-us-army-is-tackling-the-logistics-of-battlefield-electricity\/\" target=\"_blank\">electrical power<\/a>,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSome requirements have been on the shelf for quite some time,\u201d Camarillo added, but the team will try to bring them \u201cinto the 21st century.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Additionally, the team will likely focus on enhancing command-and-control capabilities, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Contested Logistics Cross-Functional Team will be the first of its kind set up since the inception of<a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2022\/09\/06\/futures-command-faces-identity-crisis-as-army-shifts-mission\/\" target=\"_blank\"> Army Futures Command<\/a>. That organization, established in 2018 to tackle Army modernization requirements, created eight signature cross-functional teams. The service tasked each with advancing one of the six modernization priorities, or a capability considered to cut across a number of those.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The focus areas for contested logistics align with what the head of Pacific-based <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/digital-show-dailies\/global-force-symposium\/2023\/04\/07\/army-readies-for-record-setting-logistics-exercise-in-pacific\/\" target=\"_blank\">8th Theater Sustainment Command<\/a>, Brig. Gen. Jered Helwig, told Defense News last month. In particular, the commander said he wants a better common operating picture \u201cfrom factory to foxhole\u201d across the logistics tail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That common operating picture should be joint, Helwig stressed. \u201cI know that I\u2019ll spend more time resupplying the Air Force and the Navy than we will the Army, at least at some phase of the operation, so we need to ensure that we build something that they can use as much as we can.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Army Materiel Command chief Gen. Charles Hamilton <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/digital-show-dailies\/global-force-symposium\/2023\/03\/31\/army-materiel-command-boss-says-logistics-are-key-to-future-warfare\/\" target=\"_blank\">told Defense News in a separate interview<\/a> last month he wants to establish better \u201creal-time\u201d information on the state of equipment and weapons in the field.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHow it works now is when something happens at the tactical end today, it doesn\u2019t inform the strategic end. It could take a day, or it could take a couple of days, for the information to allow me to react to it,\u201d Hamilton said. \u201cThe must-do is when it happens at the tactical end; it\u2019s got to inform a decision at my end.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Helwig also said the Army needs new watercraft. The service recently experimented with that capability at its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2022\/03\/29\/project-convergence-2022-will-focus-on-both-indo-pacific-and-european-scenarios\/\" target=\"_blank\">Project Convergence experiment last fall<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe learned a lot about what watercraft can do, but more importantly what they can\u2019t do right now in terms of the age of the fleet,\u201d Helwig noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Army Futures Command representatives plan to attend some upcoming exercises to better refine capabilities they want to pursue within the new cross-functional team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Army has not embarked on a new watercraft program since the mid-1990s, \u201cso it\u2019s a pivotal time for Army watercraft,\u201d Brig. Gen. Luke Peterson, program executive officer for combat support and combat service support, told Defense News in an interview last fall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The service hit an important milestone on Oct. 10, 2022, when it put its first new prototype of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/naval\/2019\/09\/17\/the-us-armys-new-landing-craft-hits-an-early-milestone\/\" target=\"_blank\">Maneuver Support Vessel (Light)<\/a> into the water in Portland, Oregon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Army is also performing service-life extension programs on its Landing Craft Utility vessels used to transport equipment and troops to shore as well as on its Modular Causeway Systems, a bridging capability connecting a ship and a dock.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The service is also working on a Maneuver Support Vessel
