{"id":65420,"date":"2023-09-21T19:00:00","date_gmt":"2023-09-21T19:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2023\/09\/21\/navy-launches-board-to-help-services-leverage-new-science-and-tech\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T01:01:08","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T01:01:08","slug":"navy-launches-board-to-help-services-leverage-new-science-and-tech","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/naval\/2023\/09\/21\/navy-launches-board-to-help-services-leverage-new-science-and-tech\/","title":{"rendered":"Navy launches board to help services leverage new science and tech"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WASHINGTON \u2014 The newly formed Department of the Navy Science and Technology Board will meet for the first time this week, with members slated to discuss how they can help Navy and Marine Corps leaders leverage scientific advances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Navy Secretary Carlos Del Toro last week <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navy.mil\/Press-Office\/Press-Releases\/display-pressreleases\/Article\/3526542\/secnav-establishes-don-science-and-technology-board\/\" target=\"_blank\">announced the creation of the board<\/a>, which is meant to \u201censure the identification of new technologies and new applications of technology in those areas to strengthen national security,\u201d according to its charter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin tapped former Navy Secretary Richard Danzig to chair it. Danzig led the service from November 1998 to January 2001, served as undersecretary from 1993 to 1997 and advised former President Barack Obama on national security issues, among other roles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Danzig told reporters Wednesday he wants to avoid common pitfalls for an outside advisory board. The S&amp;T Board won\u2019t advocate for more funding or specific projects, it won\u2019t recommend changes to acquisition or personnel policies to accommodate new technologies, and it won\u2019t simply point out technological advances in the commercial sector the Navy ought to look at.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAn S&amp;T board should be helping to flag the potential of these new technologies, but [also] help the services try and figure out how to actually utilize them,\u201d Danzig said. \u201cThat\u2019s a tough question, that\u2019s a lot harder question than simply as a generality urging that we attend to the possibilities of artificial intelligence,\u201d for example.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He noted \u201cone of the classic examples of revolution in military affairs as a result of technology was the German creation of blitzkrieg, from taking the combustion engine \u2014 the airplane \u2014 and the radio, and combining them to create a new form of warfare.\u201d While other nations had access to both technologies, Germany combined the two in a disruptive way, while France continued to invest in traditional military ideas such as the Maginot Line<b>, <\/b>Danzig said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The board includes leaders from academia and industry as well as former military and NASA officials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"5914\" height=\"4548\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/7948929.jpg.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-117923\" srcset=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/7948929.jpg.jpg 5914w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/7948929.jpg.jpg?resize=300,231 300w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/7948929.jpg.jpg?resize=768,591 768w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/7948929.jpg.jpg?resize=1024,787 1024w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/7948929.jpg.jpg?resize=1536,1181 1536w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/7948929.jpg.jpg?resize=2048,1575 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 5914px) 100vw, 5914px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">U.S. Navy Vice Chief of Naval Operations Adm. the Strategic Capabilities Office, which look at rapidly matching existing technology to warfighter problems for short-term solutions, Danzig said this board will consider a longer horizon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The board will meet for the first time Sept. 22 and will begin to discuss what to tackle first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Danzig said the board would tackle issues like autonomy, robotics, generative artificial intelligence and other widely discussed emerging technologies, but would also look at advances in oceanography and other niche topics important to the sea services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to the Federal Advisory Committee Act Database, the board will meet four times a
