{"id":65428,"date":"2023-10-10T10:00:00","date_gmt":"2023-10-10T10:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2023\/10\/10\/op-tempo-training-complexity-pose-risk-to-aircrews-per-aviation-boss\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T00:58:55","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T00:58:55","slug":"op-tempo-training-complexity-pose-risk-to-aircrews-per-aviation-boss","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/training-sim\/2023\/10\/10\/op-tempo-training-complexity-pose-risk-to-aircrews-per-aviation-boss\/","title":{"rendered":"Op tempo, training complexity pose risk to aircrews, per aviation boss"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WASHINGTON \u2014 A few months ago, the Army\u2019s aviation community <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2023\/06\/08\/youre-always-fighting-gravity-the-state-of-army-aviation\/\" target=\"_blank\">appeared to be facing a dire situation<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A series of deadly helicopter crashes killed 14 soldiers between February and April, interrupting one of the safest periods in the Army\u2019s flying history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That led the service\u2019s leaders to order an Army-wide safety stand down in May \u2014 the rare move grounded all non-deployed flying units until they completed a mandatory safety training program led by their commanding generals. The sessions, leaders said, also allowed junior troops and other community members to provide feedback on safety practices and challenges in the community.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/news\/your-army\/2023\/06\/08\/youre-always-fighting-gravity-the-state-of-army-aviation\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/7684761-2.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">\u2018You\u2019re always fighting gravity\u2019 \u2014 The state of Army aviation<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Despite recent tragedy and turmoil, senior Army leaders argue that the aviation branch is on the right track.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ahead of the Association of the U.S. Army annual meeting, Army Times spoke with aviation branch chief Maj. Gen. Mac McCurry, who commands the aviation schoolhouse and Fort Novosel, Alabama, about the stand down\u2019s findings and ongoing initiatives in Army aviation. McCurry had not yet briefed senior leaders on the findings as of the Sept. 21 interview, so senior leaders have not finalized corresponding policy initiatives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">McCurry says he is optimistic that the service will learn the right lessons from the stand down as it shifts its focus to a potential large-scale war with a foe like China.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI think Army aviation is at an inflection point \u2014 we\u2019ve been here before; we have the right leadership in place,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Army\u2019s top aviator said the stand down confirmed some commonly understood or long-suspected phenomena in the community that are affecting safety and readiness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">McCurry highlighted the high op tempo that combat aviation brigades face.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe knew that the units in our combat aviation brigades were running hard&#8230;and so that was confirmed,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many of the tasks that take aviation troops from home include training and rotations overseas, which isn\u2019t too different from the era of the Global War on Terror.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But because today\u2019s preparations are focused on \u201ctraining to employ [flight] platoons, companies and battalions,\u201d the build-up is more intense and less predictable for planners, maintainers and others, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During the counterinsurgency-focused years, Army aircraft mainly operated in two-ship teams, the general explained. That meant maintenance personnel could work in staggered teams and maintain 24-hour operations. But when you\u2019re training to fight a high-intensity war, that requires having more helicopters in the sky \u2014 and more planning and last-minute work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maintainers also grew accustomed to having contractor support when deployed, McCurry added, so \u201cin many cases&#8230;we deployed all the crew members but not all the maintainers.\u201d That means a generation of mid-career maintenance personnel don\u2019t have \u201cthe sets and reps\u201d of experience that they could\u2019ve gotten.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He\u2019s optimistic that a revamped maintenance training program \u2014 which formally ties career badges to proficiency testing \u2014 can ensure units are able to accurately assess and enhance their maintainers\u2019 skills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">McCurry also said the stand down highlighted how today\u2019s younger pilots largely don\u2019t have the War on Terror-style combat deployments that would allow them to accrue hundreds of operational flying hours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019ve seen a pretty significant drop in the flight hour level of any given warrant officer cohort,\u201d he said. That\u2019s increased the importance of risk management and \u201ctailored\u201d mission design and briefing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Other findings from the stand down were less intuitive, according to McCurry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The general noted that today\u2019s troops are very aware of the service\u2019s strategic priorities, thanks to modern communications, which has units anxious to do complex training to prepare for high-intensity conflict. But some units, because of the experience gap and the heightened learning curve for such work, \u201cwere jumping to some collective things before we had focused on the fundamentals.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe saw some units were out-training their level of experience,\u201d he added. To address that gap, McCurry said, the branch is trying to improve individual tactical and technical training courses, recruit more instructor pilots, and standardize crew certification on training progressions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition to harnessing the lessons learned from the stand down, McCurry shared that the aviation branch is leaning into its heritage in an effort to build cohesiveness across the community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The effort, dubbed \u201cOperation 83\u2033 after the year when aviation became a standalone career branch, uses historical lessons to impart pilots \u201cwith the sacred trust Army aviation enjoys with the soldier on the ground.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Overall, McCurry is pleased with the progress the Army has made in preventing more deadly aviation mishaps after this spring\u2019s accidents, and he expressed his \u201cheartfelt condolences and care to the families of those we lost.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSince that time, we\u2019ve flown over 213,000 hours,\u201d while experiencing only one Class A mishap, he said. But McCurry added that he is \u201cnot satisfied.\u201d And he won\u2019t be until Army aviation has another year without losing any soldiers.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The
