{"id":65671,"date":"2023-11-08T09:52:02","date_gmt":"2023-11-08T09:52:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2023\/11\/08\/spains-navantia-teams-with-australian-shipbuilders-for-corvette-offer\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T01:00:18","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T01:00:18","slug":"spains-navantia-teams-with-australian-shipbuilders-for-corvette-offer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/global\/europe\/2023\/11\/08\/spains-navantia-teams-with-australian-shipbuilders-for-corvette-offer\/","title":{"rendered":"Spain\u2019s Navantia teams with Australian shipbuilders for corvette offer"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">PARIS \u2014 Navantia\u2019s Australian subsidiary has set up a partnership with Australian shipyard Austal and engineering and shipbuilding company Civmec to jointly propose six corvettes for the Royal Australian Navy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The three companies have been working together on a detailed proposal since November 2022, and they submitted the idea to the Australian government in response to this year\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/global\/asia-pacific\/2023\/04\/24\/more-missiles-less-vehicles-australia-unveils-strategic-review\/\">Defense Strategic Review<\/a>, Spanish naval shipbuilder Navantia said in a Nov. 7 statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Australia\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/global\/asia-pacific\/2023\/10\/06\/australia-invests-in-expanding-155mm-munitions-aerial-bomb-capacity\/\">defense review<\/a>, published in April, called for the country\u2019s Navy to have a fleet that would be consistent with a strategy of a larger number of smaller surface vessel. Corvette is typically the designation for the smallest category of warship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNavantia offers the partnership a mature design for a highly capable vessel, backed by Navantia Australia\u2019s local and proven design capability,\u201d Navantia Australia Director Israel Lozano said in the statement. \u201cEach partner brings a crucial component to the delivery of a project of this scale.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The proposal was made public at the Indo Pacific 2023 maritime event being held in Sydney. Navantia brings design expertise, Austal has a skilled workforce and Civmec would provide state-of-the-art facilities and experience building Australia\u2019s Arafura-class vessels, according to Lozano.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The proposed corvette is based on Navantia\u2019s Avante family of patrol vessels. The company in 2018 won a contract from Saudi Arabia to build five corvettes bases on the Avante 2200 design, and has been<a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/global\/europe\/2023\/05\/18\/spains-navantia-expects-new-warship-sales-to-saudi-arabia\/\"> eyeing a follow-up order<\/a> in 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Australian vessels, to be called the Tasman class, would be entirely built in Henderson, Western Australia. Production could start quickly, as the design is \u201cvery advanced\u201d and based on an operational reference ship, according to Navantia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cTogether with Navantia\u2019s demonstrable track record in technology transfer to build regional capability, this partnership will establish an integrated shipbuilding enterprise in Western Australia,\u201d Lozano said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The corvettes would each have a crew of less than 100 sailors, and integrate the Saab 9LV combat management system, CEA Technologies\u2019 FAR
