{"id":65689,"date":"2023-11-28T22:04:56","date_gmt":"2023-11-28T22:04:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2023\/11\/28\/pratt-to-start-receiving-f-35-engine-upgrade-contracts-in-early-2024\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T00:58:56","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T00:58:56","slug":"pratt-to-start-receiving-f-35-engine-upgrade-contracts-in-early-2024","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/air\/2023\/11\/28\/pratt-to-start-receiving-f-35-engine-upgrade-contracts-in-early-2024\/","title":{"rendered":"Pratt to start receiving F-35 engine upgrade contracts in early 2024"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WASHINGTON \u2014 The Pentagon expects to start issuing early next year the first in a series of sole-source contracts to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/air\/2023\/03\/13\/pentagon-rethinks-f-35-engine-program-will-upgrade-f135\/\" target=\"_blank\">Pratt &amp; Whitney to upgrade<\/a> the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/air\/2022\/07\/15\/the-f-35-engine-is-at-a-crossroads-with-billions-of-dollars-for-industry-at-stake\/\" target=\"_blank\">F-35 Joint Strike Fighter\u2019s engines<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a <a href=\"https:\/\/sam.gov\/opp\/2b069e3e24104c648b21f8a2db55d0f4\/view\" target=\"_blank\">notice posted online Monday<\/a>, the government said the follow-on contract actions to RTX-owned Pratt &amp; Whitney will begin in the second quarter of fiscal 2024, and continue through the end of December 2031.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The estimated value of the contracts was not immediately available, but Jen Latka,, vice president for Pratt\u2019s F135 program, told reporters in December 2022 the ECU\u2019s development would likely cost about $2.4 billion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pratt &amp; Whitney, which makes the F135 engines that power all three version of the F-35, said in a separate statement Tuesday it expects to finish the preliminary design of its Engine Core Upgrade for the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter in December. The company added that it will be ready for the government\u2019s official review of that design the following month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Engine Core Upgrade is intended to provide more power and cooling capabilities to the F-35 without requiring its current F135 engines to be replaced with a new design. Defense officials say the power and cooling boost will be necessary as the F-35 continues to be upgraded, particularly with a slate of improvements known as the Block 4 modernization, which will include greater weapons capacity, new sensors, and improved electronic warfare and target recognition capabilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cPratt &amp; Whitney has 600 employees fully dedicated to this effort, and we\u2019re on track to deliver F-35 operators the power needed to enable Block 4 capabilities and beyond starting in 2029,\u201d Jen Latka, vice president for Pratt\u2019s F135 program, said in a statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Pentagon\u2019s sole-source notice said the upcoming contracts will cover work for the ECU\u2019s engineering and manufacturing phase, including maturing its design, manufacturing and developing test articles<b> <\/b>and integrating weapon systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The notice did not say how much the contracts might be worth, but Latka told reporters in December 2022 the ECU\u2019s development would likely cost about $2.4 billion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Pentagon had also considered a new engine design from General Electric Aerospace, dubbed the XA100, based on adaptive engine technology. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/air\/2023\/03\/16\/us-air-force-secretary-wants-another-shot-at-adaptive-f-35-engine\/\" target=\"_blank\">Air Force was keenly interested in GE\u2019s XA100<\/a> and its greater power and cooling abilities for the F-35A jets it flies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, the Pentagon concluded GE\u2019s design likely wouldn\u2019t work for the Marine Corps\u2019 vertical takeoff F-35B variant, and had doubts about its suitability for the Navy\u2019s carrier-based F-35C. Those worries, as well as concerns over the GE adaptive engine\u2019s potential costs, led the Pentagon to stick with and upgrade the F-35\u2032s current engine in a big win for Pratt &amp;
