{"id":65748,"date":"2023-10-09T20:32:37","date_gmt":"2023-10-09T20:32:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2023\/10\/09\/bae-preps-adaptable-armored-vehicle-turret-for-counter-drone-missions\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T01:01:38","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T01:01:38","slug":"bae-preps-adaptable-armored-vehicle-turret-for-counter-drone-missions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/industry\/techwatch\/2023\/10\/09\/bae-preps-adaptable-armored-vehicle-turret-for-counter-drone-missions\/","title":{"rendered":"BAE preps adaptable armored vehicle turret for counter-drone missions"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WASHINGTON \u2014 BAE Systems hopes a prototype redesign of its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/industry\/2022\/10\/11\/us-army-bae-aim-to-accelerate-armored-vehicle-production\/\" target=\"_blank\">new armored vehicle\u2019s<\/a> turret could one day allow the U.S. Army to rapidly adapt it into an anti-drone weapon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">BAE is now developing the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2023\/03\/14\/first-unit-gets-new-armored-multi-purpose-vehicles-replacing-old-m113s\/\" target=\"_blank\">Armored Multi-Purpose Vehicle<\/a> for the Army as a replacement for the Vietnam-era M113 armored personnel carriers. The company has so far built more than 270 of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2021\/03\/01\/us-armys-newest-tracked-vehicle-will-undergo-initial-operational-test-in-early-2022\/\" target=\"_blank\">tracked, heavily-armored AMPVs<\/a>, and hundreds more are on the way, according to BAE\u2019s vice president of business development for combat mission systems, Jim Miller. The business official spoke to Defense News on Oct. 9 at the Association of the U.S. Army\u2019s conference in Washington.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The AMPV has five variants, including versions designed to fire mortars, a command-and-control vehicle, and medical vehicles for evacuating or treating troops wounded on the battlefield.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But BAE thinks the AMPV can do more \u2014 and that the Army will want it to carry out additional missions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The company created a prototype that essentially has its roof plate chopped and replaced with a version \u2014 dubbed the External Mission Equipment Package, or ExMEP \u2014 that has an adaptable turret on top. The ExMEP plate uses modular, open-systems architecture for quick adaptability, Miller said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">BAE outfitted its prototype AMPV at AUSA with a counter-drone turret commonly used on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2022\/03\/30\/us-armys-short-range-air-defense-capability-will-grow-to-a-battalion-by-years-end\/\" target=\"_blank\">Army\u2019s Maneuver-Short Range Air Defense<\/a>, or M-SHORAD, system to demonstrate what could be added to the vehicle without much difficulty or cost.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe Army doesn\u2019t have to test all that stuff again,\u201d Miller said. \u201cAll the pieces have [already] been tested.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Miller compared the concept to a Picatinny rail system on a rifle that allows a soldier to quickly adapt a weapon with features such as a scope, targeting laser or grenade launcher.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The M-SHORAD counter-drone system that was adapted into the AMPV is the Moog-made Reconfigurable Integrated-weapons Platform turret.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">BAE adapted its AMPV with a 30mm gun, a 7.62mm machine gun, Stinger missiles, radar and other tracking systems. However, Miller said the Stingers could be replaced with Hellfire missiles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Miller said the work to adapt different systems onto an AMPV would likely happen in BAE facilities or depots, not in the field. One adaptation took place in a few days, he explained, but cautioned that not all might happen that quickly. The integration of command-and-control systems into the AMPV is complicated, he said \u2014 but it can be done.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe want to show the Army that \u2026 this vehicle is completely adaptable,\u201d Miller said. \u201cIt is [a] modular, open-systems [architecture], and should they want to do a rapid program development for something like [M-SHORAD], they could do something like we\u2019re showing here.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">BAE started planning these AMPV adaptations at last year\u2019s AUSA conference, he noted. But the firm isn\u2019t yet planning to start adapting its already in-construction AMPVs with the adaptable top, he said, and it will be up to the Army to decide if it wants this to be another official variant, or if it wants to adjust BAE\u2019s design.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOur base planning idea is to keep this as low cost as possible so that the Army can do
