Tommy Tuberville\u2019s (R-AL) hold on Pentagon nominees. Tuberville ended his blockade last week for all but the highest-tier of roles still vacant \u2014 including the top policy job.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In late July, the administration nominated Derek Chollet, a former Pentagon official now serving in the State Department, to fill the top position, which has been empty since Colin Kahl left government earlier that month. Sasha Baker, the confirmed deputy undersecretary of defense for policy, has been performing that role on an acting basis. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armed-services.senate.gov\/hearings\/to-consider-the-nominations-of-honorable-derek-h-chollet-to-be-under-secretary-of-defense-for-policy-and-ms-cara-l-abercrombie-to-be-assistant-secretary-of-defense-for-acquisition\" target=\"_blank\">Chollet appeared before the Senate Armed Services committee<\/a> for a hearing on his nomination in late September, but hasn\u2019t been confirmed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Karlin has worked across the Defense Department since President Joe Biden took office in 2021. In her current role,<b> <\/b>she focused on writing and then implementing the 2022 National Defense Strategy, which tagged China and Russia as America\u2019s \u201cpacing\u201d and \u201cacute\u201d threats. She also helped shepherd the AUKUS agreement, a wide-ranging security pact with Australia and the United Kingdom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhen you look at all these challenges that are happening around the world, it\u2019s American leadership that is playing the outsized role,\u201d Karlin told Defense News earlier this month at the Reagan National Defense Forum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A spokesperson for Karlin said that after a \u201csemester at sea\u201d with family, she will transition to academia \u2014 a home for many who have worked in top Pentagon policy roles in the past, including Kahl. The spokesperson didn\u2019t specify where she would move other than to say it would be an \u201cacademic team\u201d working with \u201ca cohort of students following an impactful tour in national security.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Assistant Secretary of Defense for Homeland Defense and Hemispheric Affairs Melissa Dalton will step into Karlin\u2019s job next week.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Her departure adds to the turnover affecting the Pentagon&#8217;s No. 3 position amid Sen.
