Lt. Col. Grzegorz Polak, a spokesperson for the agency, recently told local news agency PAP that 11 entities applied, including companies from \u201cEuropean countries: Spain, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, and Italy, but also the Republic of Korea.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The available information indicates Warsaw aims to buy three to four submarines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A manager from German submarine builder ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems told Defense News in London that the company understands \u201cPoland is looking for a submarine that would be well-suited for the Baltic Sea, a large unit.\u201d The submarine on offer could be made at the company\u2019s new assembly line at the shipyard in Kiel, Germany, which ThyssenKrupp is launching this week, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOur offer comprises the HDW-class submarines: the Type 212A, which was designed for Baltic Sea operations, the export variant of the Type 214, or a compromise between the two, the Type 212 CD which has been ordered by the German Navy and Royal Norwegian Navy,\u201d according to the manager, who would only speak on the condition of anonymity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While the ministry analyzes applications, local media outlet Defence24 reported other participants in the market consultation include <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/global\/europe\/2018\/06\/15\/naval-group-execs-head-to-poland-to-extoll-virtues-of-its-submarine\/\" target=\"_blank\">France\u2019s Naval Group<\/a>, Italy\u2019s Fincantieri, Spain\u2019s Navantia, South Korea\u2019s Hanwha and Hyundai companies, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/smr\/european-balance-of-power\/2017\/09\/06\/mspo-saab-joins-forces-with-polish-shipyard-eyes-sub-tender\/\" target=\"_blank\">Sweden\u2019s Saab<\/a>, and the U.K.\u2019s Babcock, among others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Defense News visited the booths of Navantia and Naval Group at DSEI. The former\u2019s representative declined to comment, and a representative for the latter said its submarine expert was unavailable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Saab told Defense News in an email that the company has \u201cexperience in developing submarines for the complex operational challenges in the Baltic Sea and beyond.
