{"id":65944,"date":"2023-10-09T11:15:00","date_gmt":"2023-10-09T11:15:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2023\/10\/09\/robot-army-of-one-service-focuses-on-single-robotic-combat-vehicle\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T01:01:20","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T01:01:20","slug":"robot-army-of-one-service-focuses-on-single-robotic-combat-vehicle","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/unmanned\/2023\/10\/09\/robot-army-of-one-service-focuses-on-single-robotic-combat-vehicle\/","title":{"rendered":"Robot Army of One: Service focuses on single robotic combat vehicle"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WASHINGTON \u2014 The U.S. Army has adjusted its pursuit of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2020\/09\/21\/laying-the-groundwork-us-army-unveils-rough-plan-to-formalize-robotic-combat-vehicles-effort\/\" target=\"_blank\">three robotic combat vehicles<\/a> of different sizes, instead moving forward with a single size that fits the mission needs and can keep up with crewed combat vehicles, according to the service\u2019s program executive officer for ground combat systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe don\u2019t really need a light or a medium [RCV] as a standalone. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2022\/04\/26\/army-to-launch-light-robotic-combat-vehicle-competition-in-fy23\/\" target=\"_blank\">What we need is a platform<\/a> that, depending on the mission payloads you choose, would fill a role or another. So it\u2019s really now about payload,\u201d Maj. Gen. Glenn Dean told Defense News in an interview ahead of the Association of the U.S. Army\u2019s annual conference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat was something that came out of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/digital-show-dailies\/global-force-symposium\/2021\/03\/17\/us-army-prepping-robotic-combat-vehicles-for-big-test-with-soldiers-in-2022\/\" target=\"_blank\">our experimentation at Fort Cavazos [formerly Fort Hood, Texas], <\/a>with the 1st Cavalry Division\u201d last year, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Army had decided the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2020\/08\/07\/heavy-robotic-combat-vehicles-put-to-test-in-the-colorado-mountains\/\" target=\"_blank\">heavy capability would be deferred<\/a> because operating a large-caliber, direct-fire weapon remotely was a \u201cvery, very difficult problem,\u201d he noted. The Army did evaluate a heavy capability using old M1113 vehicles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The service entered the experiment with surrogate light and medium robotic combat vehicles, thinking the RCV light, medium and heavy \u201cwere distinct mission roles with distinct platforms,\u201d Dean said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But \u201cthe outcome of the experiment [found] we really need a modular platform that kind of falls in between the two [light and medium],\u201d he added. \u201cIt can be a little bit bigger than we were allowing the light to be, but it doesn\u2019t need to be as big as we were expecting the medium to be because what we found is the available options for payloads that exist in the defense industry right now could \u2026 fit on that smaller platform.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/land\/2019\/05\/10\/dirty-work-robots-take-on-complex-breach-as-army-evaluates-potential\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/IMG_4035.JPG.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Dirty work: Robots take on complex obstacles in US Army exercise<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Learning by doing, the Army is assessing how robots can be an asset on the battlefield.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The size of the platform allows the RCV to be sling-loaded from a helicopter and transported using palletized load systems. There is also an objective requirement to fit inside a CH-47 Chinook cargo helicopter, Dean noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In September, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2023\/09\/21\/army-picks-four-to-build-robotic-combat-vehicle-prototypes\/\" target=\"_blank\">Army chose four companies to design and build prototypes for the new RCV<\/a>: McQ, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/digital-show-dailies\/ausa\/2022\/10\/10\/textron-unveils-its-ground-robot-that-can-swim\/\" target=\"_blank\">Textron Systems<\/a>, General Dynamics Land Systems and Oshkosh Defense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The companies have until August 2024 to build the prototypes and deliver them to the Army for testing and evaluation with soldiers. This marks the first phase of a competition planned to eventually become a program of record.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The companies will first focus on reconnaissance payloads, Dean said. The Army wants each design to incorporate the Common Remotely Operated Weapon Station-Javelin as well as a tethered drone of each company\u2019s choice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Army is expected to choose a single winner in the second phase of the competition in fiscal 2025 to deliver up to nine prototypes the following year. The service has a production decision slated for FY27; fielding to the first unit is set for FY28.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Army will eventually choose more payloads, Dean added. Some other capabilities include smoke to provide screening; electronic warfare technology; counter-drone systems; and chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear sensor detection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cImagine the RCV is a robot with a deck, and then what we put on the deck defines what it does,\u201d Dean said. \u201cOf course it\u2019s not just the robot: It\u2019s the communication system, it\u2019s what we call the warrior-machine interface. That\u2019s how the soldiers operate it remotely. And then that\u2019s got to be packaged inside a control vehicle.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Army has learned a great deal from<a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2020\/01\/09\/army-picks-winners-to-build-light-and-medium-robotic-combat-vehicles\/\" target=\"_blank\"> QinetiQ-built surrogate RCV-Light systems<\/a> that went through two National Training Center rotations at Fort Irwin, California, Dean said. The surrogates were used by the opposing force \u2014 the 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, nicknamed Black Horse \u2014 at the center.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBlack Horse has prove[d] tremendously adaptive in how they have employed the robots,\u201d Dean said. \u201cThey had robots leading flank attacks with smoke and electronic warfare all employed at the same time. They\u2019ve used them for an economy of force, and we had two robots holding off an entire U.S. infantry company and performing very successfully.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lessons from the experimentation are helping the service map out how it might use its robotic capability, \u201cand that ultimately may adjust some of the concepts and some of the requirements that we pursue,\u201d Dean added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Simultaneously, the Army\u2019s Combat Capabilities Development Command is experimenting on payload options using the service\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2019\/10\/31\/heres-the-robotic-vehicle-that-will-carry-equipment-for-us-troops\/\" target=\"_blank\">Squad Multipurpose Equipment Transport<\/a> robotic vehicle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While the Army is pursuing the RCV for heavy maneuver forces, that Squad Multipurpose Equipment Transport vehicle could still be the robot of choice for lighter formations, Dean said. The robotic combat vehicle can keep up with Strykers and Bradleys, whereas the transport vehicle might struggle in the upper speed and range required for those formations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Squad Multipurpose Equipment Transport \u201cis a very capable, small platform, and we\u2019re seeing a lot of value with experimentation,\u201d Dean
