Gen. Ed Barker, the service\u2019s program manager for Intelligence, Electronic Warfare and Sensors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The service built the two aerial intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance demonstrator aircraft \u2014 known as Artemis and Ares \u2014 to try out capabilities the service <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/digital-show-dailies\/aaaa\/2017\/04\/19\/us-army-intelligence-bottom-up-review-underway\/\" target=\"_blank\">will need for a modernized fixed-wing ISR fleet<\/a>. Barker told reporters during a Dec. 5 briefing the aircraft are bridging an operational gap as the service begins to divest some of its legacy ISR aircraft.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/c4isrnet\/battlefield-tech\/2023\/12\/06\/new-high-altitude-spying-program-to-come-to-us-army-in-fiscal-2025\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/fires-balloon.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">New high-altitude spying program to come to US Army in fiscal 2025<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">High-altitude platforms with deep-sensing capabilities could soon come to the Army, providing a new way for troops to see across vast distances.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Army is revamping its aerial reconnaissance and electronic warfare arsenals and moving away from its aging Guardrail turboprop planes to better prepare for potential large-scale conflict with Russia and China. The service wants a plane with much greater duration and speed and payload capacity that can see, detect and target threats from farther distances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2021\/05\/27\/looking-at-high-speed-isr-jet-capability-us-army-deploys-demonstrator-to-europe\/\" target=\"_blank\">Artemis has flown more than 600 sorties<\/a> in support of U.S. European Command\u2019s operations and Ares has flown 300 sorties in the Indo-Pacific, Barker said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Artemis \u2014 or Aerial Reconnaissance and Targeting Exploitation Multi-Mission Intelligence System \u2014 has flown in the European theater for nearly three years. (Photo courtesy of the U.S. Army)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The other aircraft, dubbed Ares \u2014 or Airborne Reconnaissance and Electronic Warfare System \u2014 deployed to the Pacific in April 2022. The Army awarded a contract to Alion Science and Technology, which is now owned by HII. Alion awarded a subcontract to L3Harris Technologies in November 2020 to build and fly the aircraft. Ares is based on a Bombardier Global Express 6500 jet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ares is a bigger platform than Artemis and provides the Army longer ranges and higher altitudes \u2014 key capabilities for the Pacific region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The sensor packages on Artemis and Ares differ, but both have electronic, communications and signals intelligence sensors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Two additional aircraft \u2014 Athena-R and Athena-S \u2014 will join the force and deploy in 2024, Barker noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Army has chosen a pair of companies to deliver jets with spy technologies to advance its long-range targeting plans. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/intel-geoint\/isr\/2023\/08\/22\/mag-l3harris-to-supply-army-with-athena-equipped-spy-planes\/\" target=\"_blank\">MAG Aerospace and L3Harris Technologies<\/a> in August said they would together outfit Bombardier Global 6500 aircraft with a bloc of ISR sensors for the service\u2019s Theater Level High Altitude Expeditionary Next Airborne ISR-Radar venture, or Athena-R.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The service selected <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/intel-geoint\/isr\/2023\/11\/14\/sierra-nevada-to-supply-us-army-with-intel-gathering-jets-in-554m-deal\/\" target=\"_blank\">Sierra Nevada to provide its RAPCON-X,<\/a> based on a converted Bombardier business jet,<b> <\/b>for its Athena-Signals Intelligence project, according to a Nov. 14 company announcement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All of these prototype programs will inform<b> <\/b>the Army\u2019s High Accuracy Detection and Exploitation System, known as HADES. The Army acquisition branch recently approved moving the HADES high-speed jet into a rapid prototyping phase, Barker said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The first phase of the HADES program will include two different aircraft with different sensor packages. \u201cThe goal of that is to demonstrate the flexible aspect of the capabilities themselves and also to understand the best of breed that we want to pursue from a production standpoint,\u201d Barker noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Program Executive Office Aviation is taking the contracting lead for the HADES program, he added, while PEO IEW&amp;S will work to acquire payloads for platforms chosen for the program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019re going to be looking to acquire radars, [electronic intelligence], and [communications intelligence] sensors to support the prototyping for HADES,\u201d Barker said. \u201cWe\u2019re looking at opportunities to look at existing sensors. Is there a way to maximize those capabilities? Obviously, with HADES, we\u2019ll be flying a little higher and longer ranges so we have to be cognizant of that from a physics standpoint.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In September 2022, the Army awarded <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/industry\/2022\/09\/14\/l3harris-raytheon-chosen-for-next-phase-of-army-aerial-intel-upgrades\/\" target=\"_blank\">L3Harris and Raytheon Applied Signal Technology contracts<\/a> to develop sensors for HADES.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Already, at least one team has formed ahead of the HADES program competition. L3Harris, Leidos and MAG Aerospace announced in October they were teaming up for the effort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><i>Colin Demarest contributed to this
