{"id":66282,"date":"2023-12-20T12:10:10","date_gmt":"2023-12-20T12:10:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2023\/12\/20\/lockheed-martin-preps-souped-up-himars-demo-for-germany\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T01:01:24","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T01:01:24","slug":"lockheed-martin-preps-souped-up-himars-demo-for-germany","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/global\/europe\/2023\/12\/20\/lockheed-martin-preps-souped-up-himars-demo-for-germany\/","title":{"rendered":"Lockheed Martin preps souped-up HIMARS demo for Germany"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">MILAN \u2014 Lockheed Martin is gearing up to host a 2024 demonstration in Germany to showcase a version of its High Mobility Artillery Rocket System, or HIMARS, with improved firepower, according to Lockheed executives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The American aerospace giant has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/global\/europe\/2023\/06\/23\/lockheed-rheinmetall-pair-up-to-build-europe-made-rocket-launcher\/\">partnered with Rheinmetall<\/a> to offer the GMARS weapon \u2013 with the G denoting Germany \u2013 as a replacement for the German armed forces\u2019 MARS 2 multiple launch rocket systems. The government has donated a handful of the aging launchers to Ukraine to support that country\u2019s defense against Russia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe are probably somewhere around 12 months out from a demo in Germany, although I can\u2019t further define what it will consist of,\u201d Tom H. Stanton, director of international business development for tactical missiles and fire control at Lockheed Martin told Defense News in an interview on Dec 13.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although an official tender for the Bundeswehr program has yet to be released, Lockheed officials hope to capture the business with the promise of increased firepower, doubling the number of munitions of various types that can be loaded at one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe Germans are interested in what we call a double load-out capability on the GMARS \u2013 it allows for two pods of munitions,\u201d Howard Bromberg, a vice president for strategy and business development, explained. \u201cThis allows the launcher to carry two Army Tactical Missile Systems (ATACMS), 12 Guided Multiple Launch Rocket Systems (GMLRS) or Extended-Range GMLRS, or four Precision Strike Missiles (PrSMs) between the two pods.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One likely Lockheed-Rheinmetall competitor for the German program is a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2023\/09\/14\/knds-israels-elbit-to-produce-european-rocket-artillery-kit\/\">European version of the PULS<\/a> artillery piece from Israel\u2019s Elbit Systems, marketed here with the German-Franco KNDS joint venture that combines Krauss-Maffei Wegmann and Nexter. The Netherlands, which cooperates closely with neighboring Germany on ground forces development, ordered 20 of the PULS systems in May.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rocket artillery has seen resurgence in the course of the Ukraine war, with high-profile strikes against Russian invaders\u2019 positions lending HIMARS an almost legendary reputation. A number of European nations recently requested or have already bought the equipment \u2013 Latvia,  Lithuania, Estonia and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2023\/09\/11\/poland-to-buy-486-himars-launchers-from-lockheed-martin\/\">Poland<\/a> among them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Italy is the latest country to have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dsca.mil\/press-media\/major-arms-sales\/italy-m142-high-mobility-artillery-rocket-systems-himars\"><u>received<\/u><\/a> U.S. approval for the purchase of the M142 HIMARS launchers, bringing the total number of known current and future operators on the continent to seven, including Ukraine and Romania.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe are in active dialogue with 20-plus European countries, including current and newer users, regarding our launcher solutions ,\u201d Bromberg said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The vendor has seen user nations request greater accuracy of the weapons, which is partly an economical consideration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBased on the demand for munitions like GMLRS and ATACMS, customers are looking for a high level of precision \u2013 to address the threat precisely where it is and with fewer missiles fired,\u201d Bromberg added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This has also involved extending the range of newer munitions, he said, pointing to the next-generation PrSM, which required motor technology and aerodynamic improvements as well as lower missile mass to strike farther.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWith our U.S. government partner, we are also developing PrSM Increment 2 with moving target capability,\u201d Bromberg said.
