{"id":66414,"date":"2024-03-25T13:38:33","date_gmt":"2024-03-25T13:38:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2024\/03\/25\/boeing-ceo-to-depart-as-part-of-broader-leadership-shakeup\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T01:07:03","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T01:07:03","slug":"boeing-ceo-to-depart-as-part-of-broader-leadership-shakeup","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/industry\/2024\/03\/25\/boeing-ceo-to-depart-as-part-of-broader-leadership-shakeup\/","title":{"rendered":"Boeing CEO to depart as part of broader leadership shakeup"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The top executive at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/industry\/2023\/10\/25\/boeings-air-force-one-charges-now-top-13-billion-drag-down-profits\/\" target=\"_blank\">embattled plane-maker Boeing<\/a> will step down this year amid a broader shakeup of the company\u2019s top leadership, capping a tumultuous five plus years that has shaken faith in one of America\u2019s most storied manufacturers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Boeing is the fifth-largest company in the world based on defense revenue, with the <a href=\"https:\/\/people.defensenews.com\/top-100\/\" target=\"_blank\">Top 100 list<\/a> noting 46% of its total revenue in 2022 came from defense activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The company has come under intense scrutiny over its manufacturing process since a pair of its marquee aircraft crashed, killing hundreds of people in late 2018 and 2019 in Indonesia and Ethiopia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Those problems have snowballed, and the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration recently ordered an audit of assembly lines at a Boeing factory near Seattle, Washington, where the company builds planes like the Alaska Airlines 737 Max that suffered a door-panel blowout on Jan. 5. Investigators say bolts that help keep the panel in place were missing after repair work at the Boeing factory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Boeing CEO Dave Calhoun will step down from the firm at the end of the year. Calhoun took over the company after CEO Dennis Muilenburg was ousted following the two crashes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Board Chair Larry Kellner has also told the company he doesn\u2019t plan to stand for reelection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Boeing also said Monday that Stan Deal, president and CEO of its commercial airplanes unit, will retire from the company. Stephanie Pope will now lead the division.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Boeing is also under intense pressure from the CEOs of various airlines, who have been outspoken in their frustration with Boeing\u2019s manufacturing problems, which have slowed deliveries of planes that the carriers were counting on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Southwest Airlines recently said it was reevaluating its financial expectations for this year because of related delays in the delivery of planes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAs we begin this period of transition, I want to assure you, we will remain squarely focused on completing the work we have done together to return our company to stability after the extraordinary challenges of the past five years, with safety and quality at the forefront of everything that we do,\u201d Calhoun wrote in a letter to employees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Calhoun acknowledged that Alaska Airlines Flight 1282 was a \u201cwatershed\u201d moment for Boeing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe must continue to respond to this accident with humility and complete transparency. We also must inculcate a total commitment to safety and quality at every level of our company,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The board has elected Steve Mollenkopf to succeed Kellner as independent board chair. In this role, Mollenkopf will lead the board\u2019s process of choosing Boeing\u2019s next CEO.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Shares rose 4% before the market
